From Thessaloniki: Private Day Trip to Meteora with Transfer

8. From Thessaloniki: Private Day Trip to Meteora with Transfer

Enjoy a private tour to the stunning Meteora rocks from Thessaloniki. Discover magnificent monasteries built between the 14th-16th centuries, and marvel at how the monks even managed to construct them in the first place. After convenient pickup at your accommodation in Thessaloniki, make your way toward Meteora. As you arrive through narrow winding rows, catch an awe-inspiring first glimpse of the Great Monastery, as it is commonly known. Try to fathom the majesty and size of a building constructed atop a huge sandstone column. Upon arrival, drive up to the monasteries in the cooler morning hours, giving you time to see as much of the site as possible. As you climb up the hill toward the first monastery, wonder how on earth the monks managed to build this incredible place. Building materials could only be brought up by a system of ropes, baskets, and pulleys, and the same went for getting provisions in and out of the community. One of the monasteries you will visit is the Holy Trinity, which is the most isolated and most difficult to reach. For this reason, it makes sense to choose to tackle the 140 steps to reach it first. Revel in the reward of phenomenal panoramic views, and see why Holy Trinity was given a starring role in the James Bond film, “For Your Eyes Only.” St. Stephen's is probably the most accessible monastery as it's situated on the plain, rather than perched on a vertiginous clifftop. Join the friendly cats who love to bask on the sun-drenched walls outside this little monastery. Admire the carved door furniture and the way the sun hits the stone and casts long shadows, and get a glimpse into monastic life through the little, open monk's cell at St. Nicholas. On the way out of the Grand Meteoron Monastery (the largest of the 6), don’t forget to follow a time-honored tradition by slipping a little note into the crack in the rocks. Finally, end your tour in Kalampaka for lunch, and relish finger-licking meals fresh from the farms around. The tour concludes with drop-off back at your accommodation in Thessaloniki.

Meteora was such an interesting place and I recommend you take a day trip if you have the time. It is a series of monasteries that were built on some crazy rock formations & kudos to the monks back then who built these extraordinary buildings without modern machinery. The train ride was pretty easy for the most part from Thessaloniki train station but there was a transfer and the ticket is only written in Greek so my suggestion is you ask how many stops it is to the station where you will have to transfer and if they can write the name of the station in Roman letters. Bring some snacks, water or a sandwich for the ride because the offerings at the transfer station are very bleh. Once you get up to Meteora the guide met me at the station with my name written on a sign. He took us in the minivan to a snack shop before the tour but once again not the best selection of food. The guide was informed and spoke good English. His name was Bill so if you're lucky you will get him as a guide.

An excellent 2 day tour with faultless organisation. Such good value. My return train left at 6.30 pm and the tour finished at 12.30pm. Kalabaka is not very interesting, so I would recommend negotiating with your hotel for a late checkout. The climbs to the monasteries are demanding, so definitely not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Photos inside the monasteries are forbidden so but the illustrated guide.

Meteora is a beautiful place. I recommend to visit. Our guide and driver were very nice and spoke excellent English. I also really appreciate Dimitris' effort to help us, because our train back to Thessaloniki was cancelled. He was amazing and very helpful. I plan to visit Meteora during another season (maybe early summer) and will definitely choose this agency again. Thank you very much

Meteora is just amazing! Beautiful landscape and interesting monasteries. Our tour was very well organized from start to finish. It’s quite a long drive from Thessaloniki, but our guide kept things interesting by giving some history of the region and pointing out important sites along the way, like Mt Olympus.

The trip was well-planned and we had an excellent experience with the skilled guide. Highly recommended!
