Delos Synagogue: Jewish Heritage Private Tour from Mykonos

9. Delos Synagogue: Jewish Heritage Private Tour from Mykonos

Visit Delos island from the Old Port of Mykonos City by the boat that departs at 5:00 PM. Sail for half an hour to reach the uninhabited island of Delos, which is considered the holy island of Ancient Greece. There you will take a private guided tour of the Jewish Synagogue on the other part of the island. Learn the Jewish history of the island from a licensed guide. Later, take some time to explore the Museum of Delos before you board the boat to return to Mykonos. The synagogue of Delos, Greece, is one of the oldest synagogues known today, its proposed origin dating between 150 and 128 BCE. The building’s most recent use is widely agreed to have been an assembly hall for Jews or Samaritans. However, the first use for the building is more controversial. While some people think the building was erected as a private house or a pagan meeting place, most believe that it was a synagogue even in its earliest form. Located on the eastern side of the city of Delos, the synagogue was far from the central areas of the city. Instead, the synagogue was built in a section of Delos called the Quartier du Stade. Join this tour to discover the Jewish Synagogue and learn about the history of the island.

Unique and interesting. We did the afternoon tour which also conveniently captures sunset with the ruins. I wish we had more time to explore a full day, but the time we had there with our guide Athena was fabulous. Only issue we had was check at the ferry port sometime prior to your trip as they had changed the time of departure and no one was notified.

I was on the fence about visiting this island during my time In Mykonos, but I am so happy I went. I had no idea just how much history was involved with Delos and learned way more than I thought. Only down side was the museum on the island was closed for renovations, but was so much to explore that I don’t think I would have had time anyway.

Great guide! She provided good information and kept it light & humorous. Was a little confusing as you get off the ferry and various groups start to form. The guide disappeared inside but soon appeared once we entered through the main entrance.

Our guide is an archeologist and architect. Her experience made our visit to Delos unforgettable.

The tour guide was knowledgeable and did an excellent job,
