Brunello di Montalcino Full-Day Wine Tour with Tastings

2. Brunello di Montalcino Full-Day Wine Tour with Tastings

Wine lovers will enjoy this full-day tour through the beautiful Tuscan landscape with stops to visit some typical local wineries. Explore the famous wine hills of Montalcino and learn about the process and passion involved in creating Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's most prestigious wines. Your tour begins with a drive along the ancient Roman road from Siena to the famous wine hills of Montalcino. The first stop will be at a small, typical area winery where you’ll have a chance to walk in the vineyards, explore the cellars, and enjoy an introductory tasting of world-famous Brunello wine. Next you’ll head to Montalcino, the hill town that gives its name to the region and its wines. Here you’ll have the opportunity to climb the fortress walls, spend some time browsing the shops and tasting the Brunello wines in wine bars, or simply enjoy the incredible views of the valleys and vineyards below. After visiting the town of Montalcino the tour continues on to the stunning ancient mystical Benedictine Abbey of Sant Antimo, a special place in a tranquil setting. You’ll enjoy a traditional Tuscan lunch at a family-run winery, accompanied by the delicious wines produced at the facility. Afterwards, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the farm. In the afternoon you’ll visit a third winery where you’ll get a detailed description of the wine-making process, and learn how the vines are cared for and about the long aging process in oak barrels. After visiting the cellars and getting to know the winemakers, you’ll sit down for a final tasting of this nectar of the gods.

From Rome: Private Day-Tour of Tuscany

3. From Rome: Private Day-Tour of Tuscany

Take a break from the chaos of Rome with a Tuscan holiday. The tour focuses on the famous Val D’Orcia region, visiting the historic hill towns of Montepulciano, Pienza and the vineyards of Montalcino. If you have a taste for Tuscany but just a short time in Italy, this tour is for you! A comfortable air-conditioned car or minivan will collect you in Rome and by mid-morning, you will be in the ancient Etruscan town of Montepulciano. The next stop is at the vineyards of Montalcino. This is where one of Italy’s best wines, Brunello di Montalcino, is produced. Absorb views over some of Tuscany’s most beautiful vineyards before heading to Sant’Antimo Abbey where, with a bit of luck, you’ll be just in time to hear the monks perform Gregorian chants. Your private driver will take you out of town to a beautiful Tuscan vineyard. At lunch, enjoy a wine tasting accompanied by bruschetta and three more types of wine along with a spread of cold cuts and local specialties over a three-course lunch. Next stop – Pienza. You will hear how this World Heritage site was conceived by Pope Pius II as a “utopian village” and get information on sites you may want to visit, such as the two Renaissance palaces and the beautiful Duomo. Pienza is a small town so you'll go off on your own and take some time to wander around, enjoying ancient architecture and views of the rolling countryside. Whatever you choose to do with your time, be sure to sample Pienza’s most important product, pecorino cheese, in one of the many artisan food stores around the town. With full bags packed with wine and cheese, meet back at the car for a comfortable and scenic drive back to Rome.

Montalcino Wine Tasting 1-Day Tour from Umbria

4. Montalcino Wine Tasting 1-Day Tour from Umbria

On this 1-day tour you discover the famous wine of Montalcino. Brunello di Montalcino wine is made from Sangiovese, a grape traditionally called “Brunello” in Montalcino. The wine must spend at least 2 years in wooden casks and at least 4 months of aging in the bottle. The retention period in the bottle extends to up to 6 months for the reserve that comes on the market a year later. Discover the history of Montalcino. The hill upon which Montalcino sits has had settlers since the Etruscan times. Its first mention in historical documents in 814 AD suggests that there was a church here in the 9th century, most likely built by monks associated with the nearby Abbey of Sant'Antimo. The population grew suddenly in the middle of the 10th century, when people fleeing the nearby town of Roselle took up residence in the town.
