Atlas Mountains and Agafay Desert Jeep Safari

1. Atlas Mountains and Agafay Desert Jeep Safari

Discover and explore deep Berber country in the High Atlas Mountains, and enjoy the landscapes of desert, valleys, villages, and open plains on a full-day trip from Marrakech.  The drive takes you first to the Agafay Desert, just south of Marrakech, where you’ll experience some dune bashing before continuing on to the Lalla Takerkoust region, making your first stop on the hills overlooking the lake. From here you’ll begin a 4x4 adventure on dirt tracks rarely frequented by tourists and climb up to the Kik Plateau, where you’ll drive from village to village meeting locals, visiting Berber homes, and sampling their traditional mint tea and homemade bread.  When you arrive at Imlil Village, located in the heart of Toubkal National Park, you’ll have the option of hiking for an hour to Armed village or continue to the village by 4x4. The 1-hour hike with a local guide is of moderate difficulty. In the village you’ll be served a Berber lamb tagine for lunch at a local home. You’ll also enjoy Moroccan salads and homemade bread during the meal.  After lunch and a short relaxation break, you’ll head down a gentle hill to Imlil village, where you’ll meet your driver for the 1-hour trip back to Marrakech via the Haouz plains.

Meet the Berbers: Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains Day Trip

2. Meet the Berbers: Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains Day Trip

Your full-day trip from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains will start with a pick-up from your hotel or Riad. First, you will drive east towards the town of Tahannaout, where you will make the first stop. Admire a panoramic view of a mud-brick Berber village on top of a hill across the Ghighaya River. Then, continue to an Argan Oil artisanal factory run by local ladies. Sample local bread, Argan oil with min tea, and learn the process of extracting this liquid gold. If your day trip coincides with a Tuesday, visit the local weekly Berber Market in Tahannout or the one in Asni that runs every Saturday. Next, you will cross the canyons of Tibidrt with stunning views of the river and juniper forest on our way to Asni. From here, you will continue to Imlil Village, located at the foothills of Mt.Toubkal. Upon arrival at the Village center, meet your local Berber guide for an hour-long moderate hike in Toubkal National Park past various scattered Berber settlements to a small waterfall. Then, treat yourself to a delicious cup of fresh squeezed Orange Juice while admiring the views before you continue to Aroumd village. Next, a well deserved three-course lunch home-made made lunch will be served at a Berber house. In the mid-afternoon, Descend back to Imlil center, where you will meet your driver. Continue to Kik Plateau across green valleys to Agafay Desert, then get ready for a 30-minute camel ride across the stone desert. Finally, you will drive towards the Lalla Takerkoust lake, which serves as a water reservoir supplying Marrakech. Your Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains Day trip from Marrakech will end with a drop off at your hotel or pre-set drop off points in the Medina.

Had a wonderful trip with Mohammed! This trip to Imlil was a well organised escape from Marrakesh to see the Atlas Mountians. Mohammed drove very safely, shared some interesting facts about Morocco and we made many stops that felt very authentic and free from tour groups. We really enjoyed the tea in a Berber home and the included lunch was delicious and in such a peaceful setting overlooking the village of Imlil. It was a short walk to see the waterfall and we were given many photo opportunities and time to take in the surroundings. Mohammed is very friendly and fun and I would recommend booking with him if you want a nice and hassle free day trip to the Atlas Mountains.

This is a toir you should not miss once staying in Morroco. Whole experience was comfortable, really helpfull driver picked us up in our riad in time, car was safe and comfortable. Food in berber village was delicious and al the landscapes you can see on this tour and passing by while driving are so beautifull. For sure you would enjoy it.

An immersion in Moroccan nature and culture! Sharing the experience of a meal freshly prepared for us by a Berber family, riding a dromedary in the stony desert with a view of the mountains and sharing a mint tea with the drivers, having lunch at a tajine with a breathtaking view in Imlil made this day the best of the trip

A very nice experience to live in the Berber villages until Imlil. Driver and guide at the top. They were very careful with us and we were able to ask a lot of questions.

Excellent guide, friendly, supportive and helpful. interesting tour
