The best things to do in Assisi
Welcome to the birthplace of St. Francis and the Franciscan Order. Thanks to its picturesque landscape and medieval buildings, it's a superb tourist destination as well as one of the world's most important pilgrimage sites! Here's the best of Assisi.
1. Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi
This magnificent basilica was built over the tomb of St. Francis himself. It's really two churches – lower and upper – as well as the original Franciscan friary, Sacro Convento.
2. Assisi Cathedral
Francis wasn't the only saint in town! This cathedral, and home to early examples of medieval stone carvings, is dedicated to Saint Rufino – Assisi's patron saint and first bishop.
3. Parco del Monte Subasio
Assisi is built on the scenic slopes of Monte Subasio, so why not explore this saint-spawning wilderness that links it to neighboring historic towns like Spello and Nocera Umbra?
4. Eremo delle Carceri
St. Francis loved the caves above Assisi as a place where he could connect with nature. It's a 4km drive, or a beautiful hiking trail.
5. Basilica di Santa Chiara
The Basilica di Santa Chiara is home to the Speaking Cross from San Damiano, in front of which St. Francis is said to have heard the voice of God.
6. Rocca Maggiore
This looming fortress dates back more than 800 years. Not only will it deliver an insightful glance into Assisi's history, but it also offers fantastic views from its towers.
7. Tempio di Minerva
Facing Piazza del Comune, this former pagan temple is now a church. It still retains its Ancient Roman façade dedicated to the goddess of wisdom, Minerva.
Planning Your Visit
Best airport?
The closest airport to Assisi is Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi (Umbria International Airport), but it's not the best option. There are plenty of trains and buses that run regularly between Assisi and the closest major airports: Peretola Airport in Florence, Rome's Fiumicino Airport, or Pisa's Aeroporto Galileo Galilei. All three are roughly the same distance away, but the transport links from Rome will be the easiest.
How many days should I stay in Assisi?
If you just want to see the top attractions, two days should be plenty. If you plan to stay longer, take your time exploring the surrounding countryside and checking out the city's best restaurants.

- If you're headed to Italy for the wine, plan a visit for between September and November, when harvest festivals pop up all over the countryside. For a weekend to remember, do your research and choose one of Assisi's art, wine, olive oil, or jazz festivals. You'll get to experience the town at its most lively.

What people are saying about Assisi
This was a last minute find and I’m so glad to have gone to Orvieto and Assisi. First was a beautiful stop in Orvieto, cable car to the top of the town and then some free time to see the cathedral and look at the local markets. Then onto lunch- where I very much appreciated that lunch broke up all the driving. Then arrived at Assisi with a lovely local guide who look us through the town and we able to capture some beautiful pictures and learn this history of Assisi especially of St Clare and St Francis. For me a trip well worth making if you have a free day when in Rome. Keep in mind that’s there’s a lot of driving as Assisi is quite far away, so if that’s not your thing this isn’t the trip for you.
Orvieto was basically a glorified, scenic rest stop (1 hour) on the way to lunch, which was excellent. Assisi started out too heavily on St. Francis with no preliminary info on the town or buildings we were seeing. But the guide relaxed and improved as she went on. The ABSOLUTE DRAWBACK was not once were we asked where we were staying so that we could be dropped off, even though the bus planned on stopping multiple places. No one asked or tried to take care of our needs. There was no question we weren’t irritated by this lack. We finally got off and made our way to the nearest metro station and went home on our own. Very poor planning of drop-offs!!☹️
Our day in Umbria with Maurizio was the highlight of our trip to Italy! We visited Todi, Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoreggio and he took scenic routes throughout the day, stopping at some spectacular spots and commenting very knowledgeably about the area in general -- he is from here. He gave us as much time was we needed/wanted in each place - it was a perfect arrangement. He is a terrific driver (his car is beautiful and comfortable), has a great sense of humor and is sensitive to what his clients are interested in -- he listens. We truly enjoyed his company! HIGHLY recommend!
The tour was very good. Tour guide was good and gave relevant information. Guide at Assisi was also vey good. Lunch “agrotourism” was good. Rhe only negative thing was that the bus was like a hundred years old. It does NOT have shock absorbers at all. Every hole on the street was a nightmare. Imposible to rest in a long three hours return.
