Full description
After being met at your inner city accommodation and driving south of Auckland, you'll begin to follow the mighty Waikato River. This river is New Zealand’s longest river and winds some 425 km throughout the center of north island.  Passing through small country settlements, you'll get an idea of the New Zealand country lifestyle. On arriving at Waitomo and entering the Waitomo Caves you will wander along underground paths, and see deep limestone shafts and a soaring subterranean cathedral that will leave you speechless.  There are many weird and wonderful formations to be seen, before you board a small boat and become enchanted by the thousands of magical glowworms above as you glide gently and quietly through these world famous caves. After lunch you will stop at the Otorohanga Kiwi House to view New Zealand's national bird, the flightless nocturnal and rare kiwi. There is also an opportunity to view the pre-historic ancient reptile the tuatara, which hides within an enclosure along with some of the native birds.  Timing it right, you will see feeding time for the great spotted kiwi.
