Auckland: Maori Cultural Experience Tour

1. Auckland: Maori Cultural Experience Tour

Your half-day tour through Auckland’s indigenous culture begins with morning pickup from Auckland CBD. The first stop on your tour of New Zealand’s most bustling city is Michael Joseph Savage Memorial, more commonly known as Bastion Point, the site of significant Maori protests against intrusion onto their land by European settlers.  Afterwards, head off towards the volcanic vistas of One Tree Hill, which has significance as a Maori memorial site, and to the Wintergardens, a complex of heated gardens which date back over 100 years. Your sightseeing caps off with a visit to the Mt. Eden Volcano, the city’s most significant volcanic cone, where you’ll get unmatched views of the city and harbor. All the while, your guide will help you to understand Maori history, even teaching you some Maori sayings along the way. The last stop of your tour is at the Auckland Museum, where you’ll see a famous Haka, or traditional Maori war dance, and even get the opportunity to try a Maori temporary tattoo. Learn about traditional Maori games and instruments before heading back to your accommodation.

The Inside Loop: See Auckland's Most Vibrant Neighbourhoods

2. The Inside Loop: See Auckland's Most Vibrant Neighbourhoods

Enjoy a guided electric bike tour around some of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Auckland. Head off the beaten track of the standard tour routes. Discover the places the locals go to for the best eating, drinking, shopping or cultural experiences. Your guide will give you an insider's view, so you can make the most of your time in this amazing city. Meet outside The Pantry cafe, at the Park Hyatt hotel located in the heart of Auckland city - within an easy walk of the cruise ship terminals and many hotels. There, you will be kitted with your stylish electric bike and your riding gear - including a helmet and a cycle specific headset, so you can safely listen to your guide as you ride along. You'll be given a short orientation with the electric bikes and do a practice ride nearby, to make sure you are 100% comfortable before the tour sets off.  Having departed from the city center, ride on the new Grafton Gully cycleway towards the bohemian Karangahape Road (or "K Road", as it's know to the locals). Formerly one of the most elegant shopping streets in Auckland, urban redevelopment in the middle of last century led to it being down on its luck for a long period. But an influx of fantastic new restaurants, bars, cafes and shopping options have led to a real revival for the area in recent years. At your first stop, enjoy a beautiful view back to the city center as your guide explains the history of the area and gives you plenty of recommendations for places to eat, drink and shop on K Road during the rest of your visit. Then its off to Ponsonby - one of the main social hubs in Auckland. Ponsonby has a fascinating past and its colorful history has resulted in an area with an undeniable buzz. Your tour will then ride through the leafy streets of Grey Lynn, as you learn about the architecture of the central neighborhoods. Next, you will be back into Ponsonby and learning about an infamous murder by the aptly-named Dennis Gunn. Ride on through Freemans Bay to Wynyard Quarter, one of Auckland's most prestigious new developments and home to some great food markets and public events. A ride over the Te Wero Bridge into the Viaduct is next  - if you're lucky, you'll get to watch it lift open to let a yacht or two cruise into the inner marina. Then its along Quay Street on you way back to your original departure point. Given what you've seen on the tour, you'll probably already be thinking about dinner and/or drinks - time to check out some of those recommendations from your guide! To ensure the best experience, your group size will be small and personal - a maximum of 6 riders and your guide. And there are frequent stops on the tour - plenty of time to take photos and listen to your guide, as they give you a local's insight into some of Auckland's coolest neighborhoods.

The bike tour was fantastic. Eddie was thoughtful and well planned. The rides are capped at 6 people to ensure personal attention and he created our ride after he spoke with us to show us the highlights that might be most meaningful to us. He took and uploaded pictures so that was never a worry either. I would highly recommend Eddie and his bike tour as a must do in Auckland.

Excellent preparation and great ride!

Great - Ryan went through all the safety requirements and made sure everyone was comfortable before we set out. Great sense of humour by Ryan and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience - recommended absolutely!

Carson was a great guide and explained a lot of the history of the area. It was a memorable ride and my wife, 2 friends and I would thoroughly recommend this activity to anyone visiting Auckland.
