Ribeira dos Caldeirões: Canyoning Experience

3. Ribeira dos Caldeirões: Canyoning Experience

Canyoning is the sport of travelling down a river situated in a canyon by a variety of means including scrambling, floating, swimming, and abseiling. The canyon you'll visit has a mystical atmosphere and is situated within a rainforest among spring water from the mountain. The experience starts with a briefing about all of the necessary logistics and safety. You will then be provided with all equipment and warm up by walking along a short trail until reaching the start. The descent starts by scrambling down the stream, having fun in this watery playground where you'll have the opportunity to try out jumping (optional), sliding, rappelling, and abseiling down the waterfalls. At every obstacle, there will be a guide explaining everything you need to do and helping you. Along the stream, there will be some jumps, which get higher as the course progresses. The highest one is about 6 meters tall. Nothing is mandatory, so if you don't feel comfortable jumping, don't worry. You can still participate in the tour and have lots of fun. At the end of the tour, photos and videos will be sent directly to your e-mail free of charge.

Feel the thrill as you abseil down a cascading waterfall and jump into the flowing waters below. Continue downriver to a water slide and hold your breath as you jump from a height of 2 meters into a natural pool, and for those who dare, there will also be the opportunity to jump from the highest spot in this area of ~4m. We will walk back along our initial path to the starting point. For a well-deserved lunch, we will make our way to the quaint village of Furnas where you will tickle your taste buds with a traditional dish of Cozido (which is a slow cooked dish of a mixture of different meats and vegetables) in a local restaurant. Afterwards we will take a short stroll to the nearby Caldeiras Vulcanicas to take a closer look at the steaming geothermal pools and geysers. End the day with a visit to the Terra Nostra Park; where you can wander through the beautiful botanical garden with its vast collection of trees and plants and/or relax with a swim in the therapeutic waters of the thermal baths here. NOTE: It is recommended that you are in good physical shape as this tour includes, at times; walking on unstable terrain, muddy slopes, and small uphill and downhill scrambles. However, you don’t need to know how to swim. The safety of our clients is of our utmost priority and so we do not recommend this activity for persons weighing more than 120kg.
