Full description

The experience starts in the upper part of Passeig de Gràcia, before journeying to experience the natural splendor of Montserrat, Catalonia’s most emblematic mountain. Topped by a Benedictine Monastery, Montserrat is an ideal half-day trip to spend a fun day in nature, just a few kilometers away from Barcelona. On the way to the Monastery, admire the Massif of Montserrat, a spectacular multi-peaked rocky range packed with unique needle-shape formations.

Upon arrival, visit the Monastery, which was founded in the 10th century and still functions to this day, with over 70 monks. It is also well-known for hosting the figure of La Moreneta (visit not guaranteed) , who is the patron saint of Catalonia. Your guide will bring history alive by explaining the history and ventures of this Monastery dating nearly a thousand years.

Board the Sant Joan Railway to observe the area’s fascinating flora and fauna. The tour will continue a soft hike replete with verdant beauty while you admire a scenic landscape in Montserrat Natural Park. To recover some energy after the hiking, you will taste the typical Catalan pastry, “coca de Montserrat”.

The sweetest way to end this wonderful tour. You will have free time to visit the farmers market, the cafe and the souvenirs stores. At the end, you will meet your guide again to go back to the bus on the way back to Barcelona.

The tour office was easy to find. The arrival of the guides was punctual. The bus was very new and comfortable. The AirCon was a bit cold first thing in the morning but much better on the way back after mentioned to our guide. Lucas was an excellent guide -- very personable, caring, articulate and alert. We were the oldest people in the group and he was accommodating and kind. We would highly recommend.

I enjoyed this trip and would recommend. We visited on Easter Sunday 2022. The guide and driver were prompt to collect us, and we made our way to Montserrat in a small luxury minivan. Once we arrived, we were escorted quickly to the funicular ahead to get ahead of the other visitors and made our way to the top. I personally felt the hike down was manageable with a lower level of fitness, although bear in mind that there are loose rocks. The group generally stuck together but I did not feel rushed and feel everyone went their own pace. Back down, we were not able to get into the monastery as it was a Holy day of celebration, so we simply wandered around outside. There was a few places to grab something to eat, and a gift shop. Due to the traffic on the day, the guide was slow to reach us for our return journey. To make up time, he quickly traversed the windy roads back down, but unfortunately I ended up vomiting due to the motion sickness.

Pol was great and energetic. We opted for the small light hike up the mtn after the funicular ride ( after Pol's tour of the monastery). Pol gave us some time alone in the monastery and if we opted to see the Black Madonna (w/ a small additional fee), we were lucky it was a light day without any crowds (mid June 2023) , which would have been feasible. But we decided to explore other aspects of the Monastery.
