Full description
Go back and time and learn about what life was like in Berlin during the Cold War. Join an exciting and informative walking tour that takes you to see important sites of the time and gives you an insider's look at the life of the residents of this once divided city. See the Friedrichstrasse station, the single border station during the Cold War. Follow the River Spree to the parliament and government district, whose buildings were situated partly along the border strip. Visit the famous Brandenburg Gate where the border ran and was the symbol of the division of the city. From the Holocaust memorial at the former "death strip", proceed to Potsdamer Platz, where the split is particularly visible in the former Tiergarten triangle. See the longest remaining stretch of the wall and the famous Checkpoint Charlie. Learn about how MI6 and the CIA tunnelled under the wall into the Soviet Zone, the methods used by the Stasi to control the East German population, and what happened to the leaders of the GDR when the wall fell. Get a fascinating insight into what it was like to live in the eastern block and hear about failed escape attempts. Hear about the changes that German society went through, the plight of former East Germans, and how the Cold War shaped modern-day Berlin.

Highlight of our time in Berlin!

Mike was incredibly knowledgable, interesting to listen to, patient with all the questions our group had and a true delight to spend time with. This was my second time in Berlin and I wish I had started with this tour. It gave us so much insight into the city itself, the people and the history. We covered a lot of ground easily and I was amazed at how well he kept us together. We had some lousy weather part of the day but he made the most of it and brought us under shelter and continued talking. I was amazed at how he was able to continue speaking the entire tour and held everyone's interest. Fascinating.

    Informative and interesting

Barnaby was a great guide who gave us on a fascinating insight into Berlin during the Cold War. His knowledge and passion were great. Our only negative was that the starting point of the tour is inappropriate: it meets with all of the other tours that Insider Berlin hosts at the Zoo station, however, the tour didn't officially start for approx. 40mins until we had spent time sorting train tickets and caught an S-bahn to Friedrichstrasse. We would have preferred to spend this time learning more about the Cold War!

    Excellent and fun

Brian was a great guide, very knowledgeable and with a ton of stories to tell from his experience living in Berlin and his deep knowledge of the history. He is american which helps cos he could explain some of the cultural things we, as foreigners, didnt know about Germany. But he lived in Berlin for 10 years so he is a true Berliner. Great at telling stories in a fun and memorable way and at guiding us around town (hopping on and off trains) in a super smooth manner. I would highly recommend. We did not see the 4 hours go by!
