From Ljubljana: Lake Bled and Bohinj Trip with Vintgar Gorge

1. From Ljubljana: Lake Bled and Bohinj Trip with Vintgar Gorge

An ‘Image of Paradise’, as it is often described, Bled has been attracting visitors with its breathtaking beauty for centuries. The calm and inviting waters of its lake spurred the tradition of making the typical ‘pletna’ boats back in the 12th century. Optionally you can board one of these wooden beauties to reach the island, with its romantic church and mysterious wishing bell. Sightseeing in Bled continues with a visit to the impressive castle, perched on a cliff high above the lake. Guides will roll back time in its museum, and enjoy the unforgettable view of the surroundings. Surrounded by alluring summits, the Bohinj Valley charms visitors with its inspiring scenery, crystal lake waters and the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. The picturesque lakeside boasts the frescoes of Church of St. John the Baptist. You will have time to discover the legend of Zlatorog (Goldhorn), enjoy a stunning view over Mount Triglav and try the hearty local cuisine. To experience a bit of trekking, you'll end the day with an enjoyable 20-minute hike to the beautiful Savica Waterfall, thundering from a high rocky cliff, and enjoy a rewarding view of the Lake.

Then, sitting comfortably in an air-conditioned minivan, depart for the beautiful Lake Bled, nestled amid the Julian Alps on the edge of Triglav National Park. During the drive, gaze out at rural Slovenia and listen to your guide’s commentary about the glacier-formed lake. On arrival, you can spend a few moments drinking in views of the picturesque lake, backed by towering mountains, and the fairy-tale steeple of the Church of the Assumption of Mary on Bled Island, there is a tiny rock islet in the center of the lake. Climb aboard a two-oared wooden boat and relax during the short boat ride to the island. Here, you will have around 30 minutes to explore, perhaps visiting the church or sampling potica, a traditional Slovenian cake, at the cafe.  Next, you will travel to Bled Castle, a medieval stronghold perched atop a sheer cliff overlooking the water. Listen to a brief introduction of the castle’s history from your guide, and then make the most of free time to visit the museum and absorb the bird’s-eye views of Lake Bled. The tour will finish with some time spent at the stunning lakeside. Perhaps enjoy a stroll along the lake, snap photos of the swan, or recharge with a kremšnita (vanilla cream cake) and coffee. Guide was outstanding!!! She took just three of us. Though we usually prefer bigger groups this was far better! There was not question I could ask that she did not answer with thoroughness and clarity. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Such an awesome experience. The guide was so informative. The day is very packed however, you still get plenty of time to explore each place at your own pace! Visiting the Vintgar gorge was a highlight of the trip!!
