Following lunch, journey back to Salta via another route to see a completely different landscape from the morning drive. Day 2: Salinas Grandes and Purmamarca. After getting picked up from your hotel in Salta, begin the journey towards the neighboring province of Jujuy, passing through the towns of Volcán and Tumbaya along the way.

Visit the town's main square and purchase souvenirs at one of the many surrounding craft stands. Afterward, visit the breathtaking Hill of Seven Colors. Continue your ascent along the Cuesta del Lipan to reach the Salinas Grandes, one of the 7 Wonders of the Argentine Republic. Enjoy free time to admire the unique salt flat and famous pools. These are long day tours (13-16 hours each). The pick-up window is 45 minutes usually between 7 a.m. and 7:45 a.m., but one day it was 15 minutes late - we ended up waiting at the lobby for an hour. For Hornocal, the tour starts at 6:30 a.m., and you need to meet the bus in their office near Plaza 9 de Julio de Salta. The guides were knowledgeable and multilingual. Bring snacks as lunch is mostly not available until 3 p.m. The "recommended" restaurants in Cafayate (El Criollo) and Humahuaca weren't great (hair in the food), but the one in Purmamarca (Kuntur) was great. Communication with the tour operator was at times less than ideal (e.g., asking for the same passport information three times, the text message confirming which tour we will go on the next day was sent only once out of three days), but everything worked out as anticipated in the end. The minibus had problems twice going up Hornocal.
