Athens: Guided Food Walking Tour with Market & Tavern Lunch

2. Athens: Guided Food Walking Tour with Market & Tavern Lunch

Just as you cannot come to Athens without visiting the Acropolis, you cannot leave Athens without tasting the local products and traditional dishes that made Greek gastronomy internationally known. We invite you to walk with us through the central market of Athens; where we will find the best raw material of the country, talk about the origin of these foods, their weight in history, learn about different Greek customs.... Of course: We will accompany our walk with the best local sweets, rich pastry works and several tastings of cheeses, yogurts, cold meats, oils and Greek liquors. We advise you to come hungry! Greek gastronomy is an important part of its culture, in which we emphasize the values of sharing, conviviality and hospitality: Did you know that hospitality in Greek is said "Filoxenia"? A word composed by "Filo" which means "friend" and is understood as love of friendship; and "xenos" which refers to the foreigner. So hospitality would be translated as "love towards the foreigner", this tells us a lot about their culture. Following this line, we want to give you a warm welcome and introduce you to the Greek gastronomy and culture. Therefore, in addition to tasting a variety of new dishes and products, we will have the opportunity to see how they are traditionally made by the best local artisans. Finally, we will sit in a traditional Greek tavern where we will taste a great variety of the best "mezedes". These are small but very elaborate dishes, typical in Hellenic gastronomy (although not so common in tourist restaurants). Will you join us in this experience full of flavors?

We very much enjoyed Theo's guided tour. It was greatly appreciated to walk through the markets and the warrens of shops while learning about their history and their future in this great city. Also most interesting was to visit several multi-generational artisanal shops and to speak with their proprietors. Theo was very knowledgeable about all aspects of which he spoke, as well as on topics that we asked about on the way. We also enjoyed our coffee stop at the end where, over a cool drink, we engaged Theo in more general discussions about the city past and present. This was our most enjoyable of the several walking tours we made in Athens, and highly recommend it to others.

Our family of 5 LOVED our food tour with Pascal. It’s something we never would have done on our own - it started with a beautiful deli experience where we sampled cheeses, meats, olives and wine, followed by a tour of the food market, and then a taverna lunch full of traditional Greek foods. The last stop was to sample delicious digestifs. My husband is gluten free and they were able to accommodate him in a way that didn’t make his experience any less enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour and Pascal as your guide.

We have been two to the tour, so I guess it lasted less than two and a half hours (it did not reach two hours). The truth is that the girl showed us what things to order and where, and everything was great. The bad thing is that we found it very expensive for what we ate and the time the girl was with us

It is a very nice experience to walking and learning things about the history and the present and the past of the place. Very useful information and very detailed guidance!!
