Chania: Sunset Boat Cruise with Guide

3. Chania: Sunset Boat Cruise with Guide

The boat departs from the Old Venetian Harbor and heads out onto the Gulf of Chania. Pass by the island’s famous lighthouse, which was built by the Venetians in the 16th century and later modified by the Egyptians in 1839. The boat continues to sail west towards Lazaretta Island, a small island close to Chania which provides the best views of the sunset across the Kissamos Mountains. The island has a vast history that predates the Venetian occupation. Listen to your guide share lively commentary about the history of the island and its former inhabitants as you watch the sunset and the sky change color. Relax on deck as you marvel at the sunset against the Kissamos Mountains, then enjoy a traditional Greek raki. As the boat begins the return journey back to Chania, admire the harbor’s glistening lights reflecting against the water as evening turns to night.

From Souda Port of Chania: Private Sailing Cruise with Meal

4. From Souda Port of Chania: Private Sailing Cruise with Meal

At 9:30 AM sail east out of the bay past the Souda Fortress on a small uninhabited island. If the winds are favorable stop to take a dip or some photos at the pebbled beach of the scenic white chapel of Agiannis. Follow the coast on the wind and marvel at views of the Ottoman fort high up on the hills and the fort of the Idjedin prison just below it. Continue past the seaside villages of Kalyves and Almyrida, around the Isle of Karga before reaching the lighthouse on the peninsula of Drapano. Again, if the gods of the winds are with you the boat will anchor in a tiny, secret cove for another quick swim. The wind will dictate if the boat sails northeast to a very small cove with beautiful sandy waters or otherwise northwest around another small island to a beautiful lagoon. Either way, the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) will be in view, serving as the backdrop to the cruise. After dropping anchor, enjoy a swim or snorkel and play in crystal clear turquoise waters while a freshly cooked Cretan/Spartan lunch is prepared with Greek specialties such as local pasta, sautéed vegetables, fresh salad, mama’s olives, goat cheese and fresh bread with wine and beer to wash it down and a dessert of fresh yogurt and sweet fruit.  Following a relaxing meal sail back to the port as the sun starts to set, arriving back by around 5:30 PM. Even if you’ve never sailed before have a go at taking control of the boat with expert supervision for a roughly 30 nautical mile trip.

The walk begins with a descent into the bottom of the gorge, changing altitude by over 600 meters. Gaze up at the stark, lush cliffs that line the narrow canyon, keeping your eyes peeled for the rare kri-kri goat, a species endemic to Crete and known for its massive, curled horns. About halfway into the walk, you’ll find the ruins of the Samaria Village, whose inhabitants were relocated after the region was designated as a national park. After a small rest, you’ll continue through the Gorge, passing the church of Osia Maria, from which the gorge takes its name. Shortly thereafter, reach the most famous portion of gorge—the Gates, where the path narrows to less than 10 feet, while cliffs rise over 1,000 feet in the air. With the majority of the path behind you, you’ll soon enter the Agia Roumeli village, set against the stunning Aegean Sea, where you’ll hop on a boat bound for a bus to take you back to your accommodation.

What people are saying about Chania Regional Unit

If you are in Crete, you should definitely not miss this excursion! It was a super nice trip with a great guide and a beautiful destination! We were picked up at 7:20 a.m. and then drove about 2 hours, during which time we picked up other guests. Then we took a half hour break in the middle of the mountains of Crete in a small cafe. There everyone could have something to eat and drink before it was about a 40 minute drive to Elafonissi Beach. When we got there we had 4 hours of free time. We were at the second beach at the back because it was a bit quieter there and we enjoyed the good weather. On the way back we made a stop at a cave where there was also the possibility to have something to drink or eat. Around 6:00 p.m. we were back at the hotel and had a super nice day!

An interesting route, narrowings, slopes, tight tunnels and mountains. Guide, majestic beach - I recommend you disconnect after some time and go left to the rocks along the road behind the pier. Delicious food at the inn on the way back at attractive prices. Overall, I recommend it :)

Perfect. I highly recommend this excursion. Very punctual support. Contrary to what is indicated, there is a guide who speaks French. You take advantage of the place with deckchairs (10 euros for 2 deckchairs).

Amazing way to see Chania and places you wouldn't normally come across. so much fun too.

Nice and interesting tour with live and audio guide.
