Full description

"There is only one essential ingredient in a ghost story: death." So say Charlestonians Ed Macy and Geordie Buxton in their introduction to their book about the haunted streets of Charleston. By rambling through the oft-forgotten enclaves of the Holy City, the paranormal authors bring guests face to face with a group of orphans who haunt a dorm of a Charleston College, a Citadel cadet who haunts a local hotel, and an angelic spirit in a Freedman Methodist graveyard, to name just a few. We will hear tales of a bookstore phantom, notorious for rearranging books in perfect vertical stacks, and a gruesome 19th-century amputation taking place in a medical student’s apartment. This tour is not for the faint-hearted! Based on historical events and specific details that are often lost in our general notion of ghosts, each haunting encounter will send chills down your spine.

This tour was an excellent evening activity. Some of us had our senses awakened to the experience. Geordie, our guide is top notch with his stories and history. Our group was small in numbers and large with energy. Communication with Geordie before the tour to arrange for the group to begin earlier was nice and smooth which worked perfectly with our schedule. Highly recommend this tour.

We took this tour with our kids, ages 18, 15 and 15. All enjoyed it, but it was a lot more about the bloody and sad history of Charleston -- a good bit of detail about the Civil War, slavery, old politics in the South, etc. The guide goes into specifics about why there might be ghosts, and how the history in the region helps to create them. It was also 90 minutes of walking and standing at the end of a long, hot day, so keep that in mind if you have younger kids. There wasn't anything truly spooky, but if your kids aren't interested in history, they'll be bored. Our kids did like it, although one was tired and restless, even at 15. We adults liked it more. Geordie is funny, personable, great at establishing rapport with the group, and he *really* knows his stuff. If you're looking for horror-movie type scary stuff, or if you're expecting to see apparitions, this is not the tour for you. (We did see bats, though!)

Tour guide was AMAZING! I believe his name was Jordy, he was funny and personable, and very informed on the topic at hand! I’m a skeptic when it comes to ghosts and ghost stories but I genuinely love learning about it, and having someone that can give facts and examples helps me to believe it’s all possible!! He even brought science in to the stories which helps because I’m a nurse and believe in the science!!! Great tour and absolutely worth the time and money!!
