Full description
After being collected from your accommodation, you will make your way to the tour starting point. As you begin to cross the Minoan path of the Kavousi, you will reach the settlement of Azoria, where local ruins reveal the existence of a vibrant city. You will encounter an olive tree which has stood proudly for thousands of years, making it the world's oldest olive tree. Getting deeper to the gorge of Mesonas, you'll pass by what might be characterized as a sign of the co-existanse of ancient and modern techniques to collect water, giving a complete picture of human “poiein”. Your trip through the gorge gives you the opportunity to “taste” the wild beauty of Crete, as well as the inaccessibility of the terrain which simply beckons hikers to overcome it. Further on you will encounter several watermills, which were built during medieval times and were operating until a few decades ago. These buildings are located at the highest point of the route. As you begin your return journey, you will discover that the same path seems different, yet is undoubtedly of equal interest. You'll discover Cretan vineyards in the mountains and the source of the delicious wine and tsikoudia, as well as many other goods that the vineyard offers. You  can observe the unique way of cultivating a Cretan vineyard, which has not changed for thousands of years. Leaving the vineyards you will encounter a castro-castle of the late-Minoan era, where the lack of roads provides archaeologists incentive to speculate the possibility of the inhabitant's connection via the roofs. The final destination of your trip is the picturesque village of Kavousio, from where you can enjoy the “nude beauty” of Crete which consists of an area of land with scarce trees and a unique tree cluster found right at the end of the path near the village. Finally, you will pass through a village whose old houses consist of unique architecture, and whose church reminds viewers of times of Venetian occupation and the strong influence it had upon the Cretan culture and architecture.
