    Samaria Gorge, the longest and likely the best-known gorge in Europe, lies 4,000 feet above sea level. Your full-day excursion to Samaria Gorge begins with a pick-up in Rethymno and a drive to Omalos, in the heart of the White Mountains, where you can enjoy breakfast before you start the hike. The trek will take you over rocks and stones, through a forest of thousand-year-old trees and along a river and by fresh-water springs. Along the way, you’ll have spectacular views of Crete’s most beautiful mountain range and you are likely to see mountain goats roaming in the wild. You will be accompanied by a professional mountain escort who speaks English, German and Greek.  Your escort will be there to explain all the necessary information about your hike and provide you with the tickets for the entrance and ferry boat. These fees have to be paid to the guide upon arrival. After your breakfast you enter the Samaria Gorge. Walk at your own pace as your guide will be at the end of the group to help out if you need them. At the end of the trek you’ll visit the village of Agia Roumeli, where you’ll find a number of taverns, bars and shops. Enjoy some free time to take a swim or have some lunch. A meeting point will be arranged so you can collect your ferry tickets from your guide. Late in the afternoon you’ll board a boat that will take you from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia, where the bus will be waiting to transfer you back to the starting point.

    • Pickup begins up to 90 minutes before tour starts and is done from central meeting points near the hotels, only in the areas of Panormo, Scaleta, Adele, Platanias, Missiria, Rethymno town, Atsipopoulo, Kavros and Georgioupoli
    • The 5 to 6-hour trek is challenging. You must have good trekking shoes or at least a sturdy pair of trainers
    • This trek is not recommended for children under the age of 6, pregnant women or anyone with health problems
    • Infants will be seated with their parents on the bus and will not have their own seat

    Beautiful hike! Be advised though that this is not a Guided Group Tour as in you're hiking in a group lead by a hiking guide, but an individual hike. Pickup was on time and our tour guide Pia was excellent. Clear instructions on where to meet up along with a clear map was given. We arrived with plenty of time to make it to the only ferry home. The hike itself is advertised as challenging however I did not find it too difficult. It's mostly flat and in plenty of shade more often than not. It's 16km long, but should not take more than 5-7 hours at most. It's super easy to follow as you simply follow the river or all the other hikers. Plenty of water spots (fresh and cold spring water) and free toilets on the trail. The hike terminates at Agia Roumeli, with only one ferry in the afternoon. Most of our group from what I remember arrived with lots of time to enjoy the tavernas and the beach! Highly recommend this as you get from and to your hotel, and the ferry all arranged.

    We booked a trip to the Samaria Gorge on Crete. Booking, pick-up and execution was easy and the tour was well organized. Only the unbelievably large number of tourists who were smuggled through the gorge here had a more than negative impact on the experience. I would be happy to book with Get your Guide again, but I must strictly advise against a tour of the Samaria Gorge.

    We had a great trip to Samaria Gorge. We were picked up at the hotel at 6am. Ingrid our tour guide was very nice and explained a lot in all languages. The gorge hike had been great. We made it through in 4 hours and when we arrived at the bottom enjoying the sea was great again. Very well organized excursion.
