Full description
Spend a day in the remote wilderness of Doubtful Sound, located in the heart of Fiordland National Park and three times longer than Milford Sound. Self-drive to Manapouri and board a cruise across picturesque Lake Manapouri, followed by a coach trip across Wilmot Pass. Stop en-route to experience the dense Fiordland rainforest. At Deep Cove, board the Patea Explorer, a purpose-built catamaran, for a 2 hour and 45-minute cruise on Doubtful Sound. You can add-on a pre-ordered picnic lunch at check-out, bring your own lunch, or purchase snacks (cash only) onboard the vessel’s cafes.  See waterfalls, rainforest and mountains during the cruise. You might spot the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, the colony of fur seals at the mouth of the fiord, or even rare Fiordland crested penguins. During the cruise, knowledgeable nature guides will provide informative commentary.  When it rains in Fiordland, the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains, and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on board the coach or vessel this landscape is spectacular. Always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during your visit. Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain!

Colin is the best driver/tour guide I’ve travelled with. He took this experience to another level, we learnt so much about the history of Fiordland National park and it’s place in the future conservation scheme of NZ’s natural treasures, and we were well entertained with his humour. The number and velocity of the waterfalls was breathtaking and information about them was superb, the trip way above my expectation.

It was fantastic!! To start off with we were rather disappointed that we woke up to a rainy day. But off we went, raincoats on all ready for the day. We ordered the packed lunch, which was more than enough, and very tasty. The rain did not put on damper on the day at all. In fact with the rain came the most amazing waterfalls, many of them too. We were very blessed to be able to go out into the sea because we had no wind. We saw dozens of fur seals and even spotted a whale...twice!!. A fantast day had!! The team were amazing...the service great...facilities clean and first class!!

This was a wonderful full day, being an hour’s cruise across Manapouri, an hour’s drive overland and a three hour trip on Doubtful Sound. Prepare for a day of mixed weather. Real Journeys are very professional and we would not hesitate to recommend them. Safety was a priority, as was cleanliness. The hosts were knowledgeable and helped make the day special.
