Full description

Spend a day experiencing the natural beauty of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park from Edinburgh. Enjoy a memorable visit to Stirling Castle, explore the pretty villages of Aberfoyle and Loch Lomond Shores, and set off on a spectacular cruise across Loch Lomond.

Departing Edinburgh, head to the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, one of the prettiest and largest lochs in the whole of Scotland. Here you can enjoy an hour-long cruise taking in spectacular views of the loch’s many islands and the surrounding mountains.

Alternatively, take a stroll through the picturesque loch-side conservation village of Loch Lomond Shores, with its quaint houses, cafes, and stunning views across the loch’s western shoreline.

Enter The Trossachs National Park and experience its abundance of lochs, mountains, and forests. Continue on, past medieval Doune Castle, to the pretty town of Aberfoyle, situated on the banks of the River Teith in Stirlingshire, where you stop to enjoy some lunch.

Travel north-west for your last stop of the day at magnificent Stirling Castle, one of Scotland’s most historically significant castles, sitting high on volcanic rock and offering wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.

Visit the castle and learn of the exploits of key historical figures including William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and Mary Queen of Scots. Travel back to Edinburgh at the end of your tour.

Meeting point

Meet outside the green Ensign Ewart pub. There is currently a shortage of taxi and private hire cabs in Edinburgh, which may make it harder to get to the departure point if you're thinking of using a taxi. It is strongly recommended that you allow for more time to reach the departure point in the morning and look into public transport options as a backup.

The wonderful Kelpies were seen right in the morning when the sun was shining from just the right direction. The Loch Lomond lake cruise was worth doing to get into the proper Loch atmosphere. Our driver had a real Scotch and we enjoyed his witty humor. We heard a lot about Scotland's rather warlike history between different tribes. The bathroom stops and the food place came at just the right time and we also saw a few Highlander hornbills. We were also taken to a beautiful viewpoint, where we got a small idea of the atmosphere of the highlands. Stirling Castle was a beautiful complex and our driver said it was his favorite castle. I hear it's very similar to Edinburgh Castle, which we missed due to Queen Elizabeth's mourning period. This day trip was a great addition to our five night stay in Edinburgh. We had really fun.

The tour was a lot of fun. Our guide had extensive knowledge that he conveyed with a lot of humor. For a day trip, the tour is just right and not too long and you get a nice impression of the area around Edinburgh and can breathe a bit of Highland air.

Overall this is an okayish trip mainly because the trip layout is okayish. If one has a day to kill, this is a good option though. Loch Lomond cruise was nice but if you are coming from Inverness, you would’ve already done one in Loch Ness. Stirling Castle is also decent but Edinburgh castle is better. Kelpies was also decent. Our tour guide was Stuart who kept us engaged with his sophisticated humour. Overall good experience but it’s not a must-do tour.
