Visit intriguing Rosslyn Chapel, explore the town of Melrose, journey to the Scottish Borders, and see Hadrian’s Wall on this full-day tour from Edinburgh. Rosslyn Chapel has always been mysterious, and has achieved worldwide fame since the publication of The Da Vinci Code. This beautiful and highly ornate 15th-century chapel has long been the subject of speculation about its origins and the meanings of its famous stone carvings. Visit the charming town of Melrose for lunch, then cross the ancient Scotland/England border at Carter Bar. Follow in the footsteps of feuding clans and families, known as Border Reivers, who fought a series of violent raids here until the end of the 16th century. Then visit one of the world's most important Roman monuments: Hadrian’s Wall. Travel to Housesteads Fort (National Trust) in Northumberland National Park, the best preserved Roman fort along Hadrian’s Wall. This was such an amazing tour. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about Scotland's monuments and history. Even though the journey between stops was lengthy in parts, he had a lot of interesting tidbits about the surrounding landscape and towns and entertained us with lots of Scottish music. Rosslyn Chapel is a must to see, with its fascinating carvings and rich history, and its use in the Da Vinci Code (though they don't focus much on this). Hadrian's wall was also fantastic piece of history and there is plenty of time to explore. You stop in a couple of quaint towns as well, and if time, at couple of extra interesting viewpoints like the Scottish/English border. For those concerned about taking this tour while COVID is a risk, it felt very safe to us; the tour guide sanitised the bus regularly and we were well spread out from other guests. Rosslyn Chapel was actually less crowded due to restrictions as well which was great.

Had a wonderful time on this tour! While the destinations were wonderful and exactly what I was expecting, it was the driver and tour guide, Iain, who was the best part of this day and reason for the 5 stars. He was extremely knowledgeable of English and Scottish history which was an excellent addition to the tour. He was warm, funny, safe driver, and also played enjoyable music that fit with the overall theme of the tour. Overall, would recommend!

Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian’s Wall Day Tour

I was particularly interested in Hadrian’s Wall; I found the old fortress and the details provided, very interesting. Rosslyn Chapel is a nice little chapel, and obviously it has many mysteries surrounding it. I went down to the castle as well (not much left of it) which was a nice walk and could have gone further to the caves where William Wallace once went into hiding. Between Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian’s Wall we also stopped in Melrose; I did not see much of the village but I had lunch in the gorgeous Priorwood Garden, overlooking Melrose Abbey (sun was out on this September day). Our guide Alan was very entertaining and has a lot of knowledge on the historical facts of the locations that we visited.
