Granada: Self-Guided City Exploration Smartphone Audio Tour

4. Granada: Self-Guided City Exploration Smartphone Audio Tour

Many visitors to Granada head straight to the awe-inspiring Alhambra, the fortified palace complex that rises above the skyline. But this vibrant and historic city has so much more to offer! Wandering through its cobbled squares, alleyways and viewpoints is the perfect way to soak up its rich 1,000-year history. On this walking tour, I’ll show you the beautiful fusion of Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque architecture that you’ll find all around you in Granada’s historical centre. You’ll start the tour in Plaza Bib-Rambla, right at the heart of the city, near the charming web of market lanes, the Alcaicería, located on the site of the former main bazaar. I’ll show you the striking building where charcoal was stored in the 1600s, the Corral del Carbón, and Plaza Isabel La Católica where you’ll see the statue of Isabella I of Castile meeting Christopher Columbus. From there, I’ll guide you through the maze of narrow streets in the Albaicín – the former Moorish quarter, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll make your way to some of the city’s Renaissance-era highlights, including Granada’s Monasterio de San Jerónimo (St. Jerome Monastery), Catedral de Granada (the cathedral) and Capilla Real (the Royal Chapel) where Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon are buried. On our tour through this centuries-old city, you’ll also have an opportunity to: • Take in famous sites like El Bañuelo (the Arab baths), Puente del Aljibillo – the bridge that leads to the Alhambra – and the Palacio de la Madraza, built as a school of Koranic law in the 14th century • Stroll along Paseo de los Tristes, also known as the Promenade of the Sad People, and through squares like Plaza de la Trinidad and Plaza Nueva de Granada • Browse the food stalls at Granada’s central market, the Mercado de San Agustín • Soak up views of the Alhambra at Mirador Placeta de Carvajales • See one of the best-preserved Moorish houses, Casa de Zafra, and Casa Natal de Enrique Morente, the birthplace of flamenco singer Enrique Morente • Find out about Peña La Platería, the cultural association dedicated to the art of flamenco During the tour, you’ll also find out the answers to questions like: • What happens if you ring the bell on the Alhambra’s Torre de la Vela on the 2nd of January? • Why does the cathedral only have one tower and Emperor Charles V only have one arm? • Whose ghost haunts the Royal Chancery? • Why can’t you stroll through the city centre along the River Darro? Give yourself at least 75 minutes to get the most out of this tour, or linger a while at the sites, cafes or bars that take your fancy along the way. I’ll tell you about everything from Granada’s famous complimentary tapas, to playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, and a few of the most widespread misconceptions about aspects of Andalusian culture – including flamenco. And of course, there’ll be plenty of great photo opportunities!

Granada Citycenter&Albayzin

5. Granada Citycenter&Albayzin

Granada is much more than the Alhambra; Let yourself be guided through the historic heart of the city and the Albayzín neighborhood, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. You will have the opportunity to walk through places as representative of the history of Granada as the Cathedral or some of its most famous squares. Our trip will begin at the statue of Isabel la Católica to go to the Corral del Carbón, the only Alhóndiga from the Nasrid period that is preserved in the country. Be amazed by the streets of the Alcaicería, an old souk that will transport you to forgotten times and will remind you of the markets of Marrakech where you can see and purchase inlay and fajalauza work, traditional luxury crafts from Granada. Next to it is the emblematic Plaza Bib-Rambla, which holds many stories and where the best chocolate and churros are served! Escorted between different buildings, we have the Cathedral, composed of three different architectural styles, and on its walls we can find medieval graffiti. We cannot forget the Royal Chapel, mausoleum of the Catholic Monarchs, right in front of the Madrasa. Beyond Gran Vía, we will reach one of the jewels of the city: the emblematic Albayzín neighborhood, whose narrow and labyrinthine streets are steeped in our history. We will walk through Carrera del Darro, where we will talk about the Bañuelo or the Archeological Museum; we then will start climbing to get to our final destination, the San Nicolás Viewpoint!

Granada Historic Albaicín: Dobla de Oro Tour

6. Granada Historic Albaicín: Dobla de Oro Tour

Do you want to learn of the Arab legacy that still remains in the customs and neighborhoods of Granada? In the neighborhood of Albaicín there is a popular saying: "If you want to meet someone, just visit their house". For this reason, knowing the historical legacy that survives in the buildings that have lasted until today is a unique opportunity. Your guided tour begins at the Square of San Miguel Bajo. It includes a series of monuments, that thanks to the Dobla de Oro project (in which both the Board of the Alhambra and Generalife and the City of Granada) have their maintenance and dissemination ensured. The buildings that you will encounter throughout your tour are: Dar al-Horra Palace, Casa del Chapiz, the Palace (garden) of the Córdoba, Casa de Zafra, Casa Horno del Oro, El Bañuelo, and the Corral del Carbón. Each one of these places has a completely different function and use of space depending on the intention with which they were built. These buildings are a living sample of how the culture shows its passage through the monuments, and today, like a puzzle, it is possible to recreate their history.

It was a great tour to explore Granada in one day, although we were very sorry that we didn't have more time for this great city. So we'll be back!! The only small limitation to the tour is that the ride was very bumpy (old cobblestones that are beautiful to look at), so a bus with better tires would have been more comfortable than the train. But the atmosphere and overall everything was perfect!!!

The Alhambra with all the palaces and gardens are beautiful, but 3h was not enuff. I wish I would of got more time and next time I will! Easy bus connections from the city centet!

Well, I would like to go down and up at some stops But the girl said it was just a trip But very good

Very good and thank you for your attention during the activity.

the door on our carriage kept opening as we were moving
