Top 10 things to do in Adelaide
Australia's food and wine capital is steadily becoming one of the country's most exciting places to live, thanks to the recent emergence of its nightlife scene and festivals, all topped-off by a gorgeous landscape! Here's what to do on your trip to Adelaide.
1. Victoria Square
Adelaide's central square is home to many of the city's most famous landmarks, including the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Torrens Building, and Supreme Court of South Australia.
2. Adelaide Hills
The hills are world-renowned for the quality of the region's wines, but book a day trip as much for the spectacular landscape and historic towns as the tasty local tipple!
3. Adelaide Zoo
The city's beautiful zoo on the River Torrens is home to around 1800 native and exotic creatures, including Australia's only giant pandas, Wang Wang and Funi!
4. Cleland Wildlife Park
If you'd prefer to spend a day solely among Australia's endemic animals – kangaroos, koalas, emus, etc – then don't miss this beloved wildlife park in the Adelaide Hills!
5. Haigh's Chocolate Factory
Don't expect snozzberries and Oompa Loompas, but Haigh's HQ offers chocoholics an insight into the creation of Australia's most luxurious confectionary. The best part? It's free!
6. Barossa Valley
Adelaide has no shortage of scenic vineyards to tour, but visiting wine buffs shouldn't miss the biannual Barossa Vintage Festival – Australia's longest-running wine festival!
7. River Torrens
Boat tours of Adelaide's river provide effortless sightseeing trips through the city. Impress the locals by calling it "Karra wirra-parri," its native Kaurna name!
8. Hahndorf
Take the South Eastern Freeway to South Australia's oldest surviving German settlement. Its Lutheran churches and lush surrounding scenery make for a quaint and peaceful day-trip!
9. Adelaide Oval
Considered the world's prettiest cricket ground, there are few better places for the intrepid sports fan to enjoy a taste of Australia's favorite past-time!
10. Art Gallery of South Australia
Beloved for its collections of Australian and Aboriginal art, this museum is one of Adelaide's leading cultural attractions. Guided tours are free between 11:00AM and 2:00PM!
Planning Your Visit
How many days?
Four or five days should be enough to see the sights while still allowing for a day-trip or two.
How to get around?
If you're planning on covering a lot of ground, then it might be wise to rent a car. However, if you have no desire to stray far from the city center, you can ride for free on the Free City tram and City-Loop bus (99C), which cover most of the inner-city attractions. Adelaide also boasts the bright green Tindo – the world's first solar-powered bus!

What people are saying about Adelaide
Our initial Bums On Seat driver and guide was to be Paul. However, on the day, Peter arrived instead as Paul was somewhat otherwise engaged. There were 5 couples on this particular bus tour and it helped that we were all of the same age group. Peter was "an old hand" local who's family roots go back generations and so he was able to provide lots of tit bits of both interesting and entertaining information. We really enjoyed trhge experience and it was a great outing. We'd recommend this to everyone.
My husband and I have visted the Adelaide Oval multiple times but were interested in learning a bit more and seeing the oval from a different perspective. The Roof Climb was excellent with some fun challenges along the way. We really enjoyed the experience and at all times felt very safe. The guides were incredibly welcoming, friendly and knowlegable. I highly recommend this experience for locals and tourists.
Awesome day out, Paul was fantastic!! Super knowledgable. The tastings were fantastic, the food was good and the area is so pretty. We were given a choice at the end to go to the last winery or to have a chocolate and wine tasting somewhere else, so glad we chose the chocolate and wine pairing experience, was so unique
My grandson had the best day - his favourite part was the old scoreboard. We enjoyed walking around the magnificent stadium and seeing the history of cricket and football in South Australia. Our guide John was most helpful and knowledgeable. A great time out.
Great tour guide, Joe. Friendly and so much information not just about wines and wineries but about Barossa’s history as well. Was always entertaining and informative, truly great day.
