Top 7 Places to Visit While In Casablanca
Chances are Casablanca isn’t going to meet romantic Hollywood expectations. But, as the largest Moroccan city, it’s the place to get to know the culture, history and people of Morocco. It’s also a great, centrally-located base for adventuring down the coast.
1. Hassan II Mosque
Rising from the Atlantic is the largest mosque in Morocco, featuring the largest minaret in the entire world. Book ahead for a guided walking tour.
2. Casablanca Cathedral
Walking around this beautiful abandoned Catholic church in the Muslim city of Casablanca is truly a poetic experience. Check the schedule, sometimes there are gallery shows.
3. Central Market
Try the olives from the local vendors. Find a bottle of Argan oil to bring home. Pick up some fresh fruit and nuts to get you through the week. Take a bite out of the locality!
4. Mohammedia
Hop a quick train to the small city of Mohammedia. This little gem is still a secret from most tourists—head to the close-to-Casablanca beach and ask a local how to spend the day.
5. Safi
Still craving more adventure? Rent a car and head three hours south to the seaside city of Safi, known for its wonderful fish market and artisanal pottery.
6. Azemmour
Swing through this coastal city on the way down. It’s the most reclusive of the three, and its views from the top of whitewashed cliffs are worth the afternoon.
7. El Jadida
There’s no other city in the world like El Jadida, a Portuguese city of Morocco. Visiting is an incredible experience of cultural influence and exchange between Morocco and Europe.
Planning Your Visit
Currency: Dirham and Centimes
Money can be confusing in Morocco, so try to get used to the currency before you arrive. 10 dirhams is generally about one US dollar and one dirham is made up of 100 centimes—think dollars and cents. Here’s where things get tricky: people will use different unstandardized monetary expressions like “rials” and “francs,” meaning 20 dirham or one cent, in different parts of the country. For this reason it’s especially important to confirm with a seller exactly how many dirham or centimes an item costs.
What To Wear
It is generally true in Casablanca, Morocco that showing a lot of skin isn’t polite. This isn’t just for women, even men shouldn’t wear shorts in public. Casablanca weather might bring you down, so pack breezy, light clothing.

What people are saying about Casablanca
This 3 day amazing experience was fantastic! I arrived in to Casablanca 2 weeks ago alone, my first time in Morocco and didnt know what to expect. Due to the covid situation, everything was closed and I was left feeling very disapointed and deflated. ... I found this tour and decided to take it before my booked flight to Egypt.... and oh my Gosh, I am so happy that I did because this 3 days completely changed my mind about Morocco and I canceled my flight to Egypt and I am now on my second tour (another 6 days) with the same driver going down South to the Sahara Desert. ... Hassan, the driver has been encredible with his wonderful Moroccan Hospitality and has made my experience here in Morocco great. ... I highly recommend everyone to take a tour or 2 with this company and ask for Hassan to be your driver. ... The company has so many different tours on offer when I come back again when the weather is warmer, I will take a 12 day tour for sure!
I was so lucky to get Bennis, who must be one of the best tour guides ever. This tour is part walking and partly by car and Bennis was very happy to show me everything I wanted to see. I felt at home and Bennis was so generous with his knowledge and time. We walked through the old and new Medina as well as visiting the beaches and the main squares. Bennis treated me to a typical morning breakfast in Casablanca and we chatted about life without rushing and with Bennis sharing information and wisdom. Wonderful experience. I mentioned that I wanted to visit Mosque Hassan II and Bennis arranged it so that I could go during the visit and not losing any time of the tour. Then Bennis and the driver were kind enough to drop me off at a good local restaurant. So grateful for this tour...met lovely people and learnt so much about Casablanca and the history of Morocco.
Great day! Our tour guide was a local Berber man & we enjoyed learning about the Native culture. He had so much knowledge about Marrakech!! Great English & French - amazing man! The Moroccan oil shop was fun & great staff. The lunch was pretty good. Camel ride was funny & nice staff. A little disorganised at times with drivers changing through the day, however both drivers were SO lovely !! Overall, it was a fantastic day! I would do it again in a heart heat VERY FUN !!
This tour -- and our guide Bennis Hicham -- was exactly what we wanted: tour inside the Hassan II Mosque (one of few permitting non-Muslim vistors) and visit the Museum of Moroccan Judaism (only one in Arab World). Bennis was extremely knowledgeable and added numerous "extras" consistent with our interests. If interested in the intersection of the three great Abrahamic religions, don't miss the tour! We would recommend him wholeheartedly.
We had a wonderful tour with such a professional guide Abdul. He was extremely knowledgeable, insightful, generous and patient. This was a fantastic way to see Casablanca. We loved it. Our driver, Assiz was very good and courteous too. Netta & Col Australia
