Top 5 things to do on a Lisbon walking tour

Lisbon's colorful history is still evident in its grand monuments and maze of streets that veer between the quaint and rustic. Here are the best places to go on any city walking tour.

Bairro Alto

Bairro Alto

The "Upper Neighborhood" was formed in the 16th century and, with its picturesque streets and elegant houses overlooking the rest of the city, remains its most charming district.

Belém Tower

Belém Tower

An icon of Portugal's "Age of Discovery," this 16th century coastal tower formed both the keystone of Lisbon's maritime defense system and a ceremonial gateway for important visitors.

Lisbon Cathedral

Lisbon Cathedral

Construction on Lisbon's oldest church began in 1147, but once they got started they found it hard to stop! Today the cathedral is a mix of architectural styles added through ages.

Alfama

Alfama

Lisbon's oldest district survived the great earthquake of 1755, and so retains much of its Moorish fishing-village charm. Come back at night to enjoy the city's best bars!

Rossio Square

Rossio Square

Lisbon's historic main square has long been the center of public life, hosting everything from celebrations to executions. It's also home to the D. Maria II National Theater.

Planning Your Visit

How do the free tours work?

Free walking tours are a great way to see Lisbon on a tight budget, and are often surprisingly good! Don't forget, however, that your guide is still trying to make a living. Bring some cash with you in case they deserve a good tip.

What about food tours?

Seen Lisbon's sights and ready to taste its delights? Food tours provide a popular way of seeing the city from a local's perspective, taking in a choice of favorite restaurants, food markets, and top-notch wine stores. Or if you're not done with the sightseeing yet, you can even choose a tour that offers both!

What people are saying about Lisbon

Wow! You need to do this, it’s all good and well finding your own way to Pena palace but there is just an incredible amount of symbolism used throughout the architectural complex which was explained thoroughly by our exceedingly knowledge tour guide. Her English was impeccable and her knowledge of Portuguese history was incredible! I have learned so much from this culturally enriching experience. Additionally we were able to visit 3 other key places in sintra, Costa da roca and cascais, tasting the best local gelatos and pastries. I don’t see any other way of visiting these places other than this. Great value for money totally worth every penny! Thank you Paula for your thorough explanations and dedication to our joy, we weren’t the most punctual group when it came to rendezvous. But she was totally understanding that we wanted to explore. But given the fact she had to do this everyday she was brilliant and so patient. Thank you so much!

I didn't have enough time to go around Lisbon, so I decided to take this tour, and it became the hallmark of my whole trip! Maria (my tour guide) was very knowledgeable with a huge amount of interesting facts about the sites we have been too and an extremely nice personality that made me feel like I am on a trip with an amazing friend instead of just a tour guide. I can definitely say she is the best tour guide I have ever met. She also gave advices on the types things I can eat/drink in the Sintra village, and I must say she definitely knows what will get you to lick your fingers! The sights selection is awesome, especially Pena Palace and Cabo Da Roca. If you are in Lisbon and you haven't seen these places yet, booking this tour is definitely the most important thing you should do.

This was a great tour and really good to give you a glimpse of places outside of Lisbon. It was worth the early start to see Sintra before it gets too busy. Our guide, Reneta was very knowledgeable and friendly and was really easy-going. We could ask questions and chat as well as have the formal tour. It was well paced and enough time was given in each of the places visited although a little more time in Cascais may have been nice.

A privileged way of exploring the Palace. You'll miss a lot if you do it by your own. The daytrip was more than expected thanks to a very well prepared guide as Renata was. Una forma privilegiada de explorar el Palacio. Quien lo haga sin guía, se perderá mucho. La excursión fue más de lo esperado gracias a una muy guía bien preparda como Renata.

Maria was really the best of the best, I enjoyed this day trip and Maria was making sure that we were entertained and The Pena palace and the history of it was interesting and knowledgeable. I am glad I went to this tour as I have learned so much that day. Thank you so much Maria.
