Full description
Beginning in Porto, drive through Portugal's beautiful countryside to Coimbra, a city with a bustling student population and the oldest university in the country, spanning back to the 12th century. Wander through the sprawling stacks of over 300,000 books and some of the oldest manuscripts in the country at the Johannine Library. Marvel at the old Romanesque-style cathedral, Sé Velha.
Cross the river to the Monastery of Santa Clara and the Estate of Tears, where Portugal’s Romeo and Juliet, Pedro and Inês, fell in love. Settle down at a tavern downtown for a delicious lunch. After lunch, head to Fátima. Here, you'll visit the largest Catholic sanctuary in Portugal, Church of the Holy Trinity, where Francisco, Jacinta Marto, and Lúcia are buried.
As Catholic tradition states, Our Lady of Fátima appeared to the three shepherd children and requested the small temple, Chapel of Apparitions, be built. The tree, Azinheira Grande, that Jacinta, Lúcia, and Francisco passed before seeing the saint, is also located in Fátima. Reflect on the wonderful history of these landmarks in Fátima with an expert guide. End the day with a lovely drive back to your hotel in Porto.
