Full description
Depart Funchal and journey to the start of your walk, where you will follow the routes of the "levada" irrigation system developed in the 16th century by Madeira's first settlers. Descend from the plateau of Paul da Serra to the Rabaçal guesthouse and walk to the waterfall of the Levada do Risco. Continue towards the Levada das 25 Fontes, dominated by moorland at its highest point. Walk until you reach a small lagoon at the bottom of an enormous cliff, and marvel at the sight of 25 natural springs cascading into the lake. Return along a different path, passing through a tunnel that carries water to the south of the island. Admire a wide variety of endemic flora and fauna along the way.

Overall a nice trip! Sara accompanied us through the mystical paths with a lot of botanical knowledge. Before you go to the starting point of the hike, you stop at a kiosk to get food and drinks there at the latest, including a last toilet break for the time being (there is only the forest toilet during the 4-hour hike). Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, take light rainwear and a sweater with you. If possible also a flashlight, because the tunnel at the end is pitch black! But a cool experience!

Nunu (driver) and Sara (guide) were excellent. We got a Whatsapp message the day before to confirm pick up location and hour, very helpful and welcome. Sara was passionate, knowledgeable and personable. Took time to explain bits of history about the island, flora and its natural reservations. We were a mix of English and German speaking people where the she comfortably switched between. Amazing walking tour paired with a an excellent guide. One the best highlights of our trip.

We were picked up by a minibus 21 people and brought back to the hotel. Our bus driver drove very passionately but safely. Our tour guide Sara was great. She explained everything in detail and with fun. And all of that in German and English. The hike is doable, but I didn't find it moderate as described. 10-12 KM and that with some rain, and 300 stairs down, and up and down again. About 400 meters in altitude. It's fun, but I was floored afterwards. But you will be compensated with the beautiful nature and waterfalls. All in all a bit crowded, but still great. At the end it goes through an 800 m long tunnel that ends at the edge of the forest. Light recommended, the tunnel is very dark. From here it is 15 minutes through the forest to the bus station. All in all it was fun and I would recommend it. Everything was perfectly organized with Get your Gide. Dariusch 55 Darmstadt /Germany
