Full description

Depart Funchal and head for the north coast of Madeira to get unprecedented views of the ocean and island from different perspectives. Follow the eastern coast to Porto da Cruz, and then drive through Faial before stopping in the unique village of Cabanas de São Jorge. Marvel at the views of the sea and surrounding mountains, and see vineyards that show off some of Madeira’s most spectacular scenery. Continue to the picturesque village of Ponta Delgada for lunch. Then, head further west along the wild coastline to arrive in São Vicente in a beautiful valley. Visit the best underground volcanic feature on the island at the São Vicente Caves. Then, return through stunning valleys and ravines carved into the island over millions of years. Pass the beautiful zone of Ribeira Brava before heading back to your hotel with lasting memories.

Great trip! As you can expect, if you want to discover the island you have to sign up for a tour in a minibus, where they take you to different places, let you out to look around, then get back in the car. The first stop is the caves, pretty awesome. Our guide knew a whole lot about the island, he told us anecdotes, fun facts as well. He took the smaller roads, some not even on the map, so we had a better view than if we were on the highway. We almost went a whole round around the island. We had a lunch included during the day, we went to a nice little restaurant. You could order something à la carte, or they had an offer for soup+main course (4 or 5 options)+ dessert + drink +coffee for 14€. At the end you get pretty tired, eventhough basically all you did was sitting in the car. The weather is very changeable, you can never know what you'll see when you get out of a tunnel. I advise you to prepare more clothes, you can leave them in the car when you don't need them.
