Full description

Encounter rare flora and fauna in the mountains and valleys of Madeira on a full-day tour by jeep. Venture off road to hard-to-reach locations and see some the unique levada walks and stunning subtropical laurissilva forests. Depart Funchal and head to Largo do Miranda and on to Carreiras. Then, make your way up to the Pico do Arieiro for spectacular views from the island's 3rd highest mountain peak. Enjoy a short walk to a view point where the whole central mountain ridge can be seen. Travel back down through the typical village of Ribeiro Frio and get amazing views of the highlands at Cruzinhas. Continue through beautiful Cova da Roda and the town of Santana before stopping for lunch at Faial. Continue on your way through the beautiful areas of Porto da Cruz, Portela and Santo da Serra. Travel through the mountainous inland of the island via the village of Camacha en route to arrive back in Funchal.

I finally did another one to the west but have no regrets as it was amazing. Our guide Diogo was really good, friendly and knowledgeable and manage to make me forget about my fear of heights even if we did go very very high. Breathtaking so worth it.

the guide was not helpful

Unfortunately the guide's command of the English language was very poor. Even in Portuguese, which is my mother tongue, he is not helpful. We were just taken from one place to another without any explanation. It is very unconfortable for people who sit at the back of the 4x4. Difficult to get in out of the vehicle, in particular if you have a knee condition. A mini bus would have been much more convenient and less expensive.

Don't worry if it's cloudy on the way up to Pico Arieiro if you're lucky as you round the bend at the top you will break though and be above the clouds. Final stop at Ponta de Sao Lourenco is stunning
