Full description
Depart from the meeting point at Funchal's Lido or take advantage of a free hotel pick-up in selected areas. The first stop is at the beautiful viewpoint of Terreiro da Luta, located a few kilometers outside Funchal. Next, drive toward the mountain of Pico do Arieiro. At an altitude of 1,818 meters, the third highest peak on the island offers breathtaking views. Once you've been to the highest drivable peak in Madeira, head back down through forest on the way to the coast. Admire some of Madeira's emblematic straw-roof houses, pass pretty villages and get stunning seascape views. Arrive at the very eastern point of the island for some superb panoramas of the north and south coasts. Discover the popular start point for the levada walks, Ribeiro Frio, on the northern slopes of the island. See interesting trout pools and original vegetation. Madeira was once completely covered by laurissilva forest, a relic from prehistoric times. Stop for lunch in Santana, characterized by its small, thatched triangular houses. Past Portela go towards Ponta de São Lourenço, situated in the eastern part of the island. This is a place where a fantastic combination of rocks, sea and nature combine. The last town to be visited is Machico, a view point where you can look over the bay and the golden sandy beach.

Overall a good tour, the guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about the island and made an effort to speak to me in English (everyone else spoke Portuguese). I did feel a little left out of conversation as none of the questions and banter going on on the bus was being relayed back to me. Whilst the trip was good and I saw some good sights, I’d rather have done one of the Jeep trips as they are more exciting. The houses you see are fake ones set up to look as they did as there are only a few left with people living in them. Good for families and older couples but for anyone younger or solo traveling I’d definitely recommend the Jeep / 4WD tours instead of the minibus!

We had the most amazing weather that day. Marco came to pick us up on time and was such a great guide! He constantly kept giving us information about the east and all the view points plus additional information about life in Madeira all along the way. The lunch stop at Santana was 1h50 which was more than enough and we had so much free time and didn’t feel rushed. Marco took us to many viewpoints along the way and they each one was more beautiful than the other. My favourite was Pont de Sao Lourenço and the dramatic cliff views. Would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see the east of the island in a day!

This is a whole day tour, which took us from Funchal around the east coast of Madeira to Santana. There are several stops on the way for sightseeing and coffee. The view points overlooking the valleys are exceptional. The lunch stop, which lasted 1.5 hours allowed plenty of time to eat and do some sightseeing. Food, which was pre-ordered by the driver/guide was very good. View of the Funchal runway, how short it is and layout was and interesting sight. All in all this was a good day out.
