Go on a 12-kilometer moderate-to-hard guided run through the mountains of Madeira. You’ll be picked up by your guide and taken to start your excursion on the third-highest peak of Madeira, Pico Arieiro, which stands at a height of 1,818 meters. Start on the trail northwards towards Pico Ruivo and admire the sight of looking down at the world around you. If the weather is right, you may even find yourself looking down at the clouds.   Cross steep trails with lots of steps through this scenic central mountain range, passing the second highest peak (Pico das Torres at 1,851 meters), jogging through tunnels, and climbing to the top of the island at Pico Ruivo, at 1,862 meters.   On the way back, you’ll go by the same route in the opposite direction, which will offer up entirely new views and experiences.

At all times of your tour you will have a guide with you, complete with mountain experience and speaking several languages. During this running tour, you will pass by Fanal, Pico Arieiro, Pico Ruivo, Ponta de São Lourenço, Poiso, Nuns Valley, Funduras and some of the more iconic trails in Madeira. After being collected from your accommodation in Funchal, you will venture out of town toward your tour starting point. Your trail-running experience begins on Curral Falso (850 meters), from where it heads softly up to the Fanal Forest (1,150 meters). Once at the forest, you will find a green open area with some cows and plenty of huge ancient trees, which together really help this place look like one of those fairy tale magical places. On the way back you will venture down to the Levada dos Cedros, where you will follow it with some flat running from it's beginning till the road where you started your tour. The track is a loop of 15 kilometers with about about 500 meters' difference of elevation. The terrain is made of dirt,  is sometimes muddy, and contains some rocks and roots.

4. From Funchal: Easy to Moderate Green Levada Running Tour

Following a pickup from your accommodation in Funchal, head to the starting point of this this brisk running tour in Poiso (1,400 meters). Start the trail through magnificent pine trees and forests with a short flat section to warm up before heading down to the Levada do Furado in Ribeiro Frio (900m).   You’ll run for around 6km on flat ground before returning back to the starting point. Along the way, take in the gorgeous mountainous landscape and stop by the scenic viewpoint at Balcões. The track is a loop of 14km with an elevation of about 500m. The terrain is mainly made of dirt that sometimes can be muddy, as well as rocks and roots.

5. From Funchal: Folhadal Trail Running Tour (Moderate)

Go jogging deep into the Laurissilva Forest, far away from civilization. On this 18-kilometer guided moderate run, discover the hidden treasures that these mountains are hiding.   Start by running flat in a levada (irrigation channel) and traverse 2 tunnels. Admire the large and small waterfalls as you jog past and experience the humidity of this environment. Then, on the second part of the tour, push yourself to climb hundreds of steps. You’ll be rewarded with an open view to the mountains.   The last 3 kilometers, you’ll be running on a slight downward cant on the roads back to the starting point.

6. From Funchal: Eastern Peninsula Running Tour (Easy-Moderate)

This 9-kilometer guided trail running experience is the best way to get to know the São Lourenço Peninsula. Always surrounded by the sea, this peninsula offers beautiful views of the water and of the volcanic formations and cliffs. If the weather is right, it also helps to have a swim halfway through to cool down.   Your track begins at the end of Caniçal Road (ER214) and follows a trail between the cliffs that make up the peninsula. Arrive in Casa do Sardinha and climb to the Pico do Furado, where you can catch an amazing view of the Baia d’Abra, as well as the islands of Porto Santo and Desertas.   On the descent, if the weather is good, you can dive into the clear waters of the Cais do Sardinha before returning to the starting point by the same trail.

7. Funchal: Ocean to Mountain Running Tour

After being collected from your Funchal accommodation, you will be taken to your tour starting point where you will warm up. From there your trail running experience will take you from the sea directly to the mountain, allowing you to run on a levada and inside Madeira's Laurissilva native forest.  You will eventually finish smoothly on a trail by the shore, constantly surrounded with the sounds of the ocean and the amazing views. The first 5 kilometers are the toughest, as you climb from sea level to 900 meters, but following this the rest of the way consists of easy running trails for you to relax until the trail's end. The final part of the tour is conducted on a beautiful trail by the shore with scenic ocean views. The total distance covered is 28 kilometers, with an approximate 1,000 meter elevation difference.
