1. From San Miguel de Allende: Hiking in the Canyon with Lunch

Begin the adventure by meeting your guide at the meeting point in downtown San Miguel. Head off on a 30-minute drive to reach the canyon. Once there, enjoy a maximum 2.5-hour hike accompanied by a Spanish and English-speaking, specialized guide, as well as a local of the area who will share some fun facts about this beautiful location.  The hike will take place on the same trail used for horseback excursions, and is recommended for intermediate hikers. Walk along moderately rugged paths and take in the dramatic scenery unfolding before you. Afterwards, head back to the ranch, where the ladies will have cooked up the best organic, ranch-style meal you'll ever have. This authentic meal will include handmade tortillas, organic cheeses, beans, quesadillas, nopales (cactus), rice, salad, guacamole and salsa, fresh fruit, among other traditional dishes. Settle in and feast on this meal in the company of your group and guide, guaranteed to be one of the best you can find in the San Miguel de Allende area.

After breakfast, your guide drives you to the canyon where the horseback riding will start. Explore the beautiful area with a river and the traditional cattle ranches. Enjoy the amazing views to take some memorable photos. During this adventure, you will also have the possibility to do activities such as hiking, swimming or get some roping lessons.  Witness a delicious campfire meal prepared by the cowboys on the trail and expand your knowledge about daily ranch activities.  This is a great family-oriented adventure that is a very special experience for everyone.

San Miguel de Allende: Overnight Horseback Riding Excursion

3. San Miguel de Allende: Overnight Horseback Riding Excursion

After heading to the meeting point, a guide will take you first to a ranch where you will visit the farm animals and search for eggs for breakfast. After having a traditional home-made breakfast prepared by local women, the guide will take you to Boca de la Cañada, where the horseback riding adventure will start. You will receive a brief introduction about how to ride the horse, before riding to the deepest part of the nearby Coyote Canyon, crossing the river and enjoying the flora and fauna of the area on the way. There will be different opportunities to gallop, rest and search for quartz in the river. You will reach the highest part of the canyon from where you will enjoy a spectacular view. The cowboys will set up the tents here, so you will be able to admire the stars at night. Comfortable tents, sleeping bags and camping chairs will be provided. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to rappel down the 150-foot cliffs of the canyon. This horseback trail riding excursion gives us enough time to take a midnight ride all the way to a neighboring village, where you can stock up on some essentials, or pick up a good tequila to help keep the stories flowing around the campfire. For the more extreme riders, this horseback riding excursion also includes a section where you can gallop or even race full speed at nighttime. The next day, after breakfast, you will continue discovering the great canyon and the natural landscapes before going back to San Miguel. If you are not ready to go back to reality, you can choose to add on a visit to a local hot springs.

What people are saying about Guanajuato

Our full day ranch and horseback riding adventure was the highlight of our trip. I took my two kids, ages 11 and 7, neither of whom had any experience with horseback riding. They both we were hooting and hollering on the trails. Loved the ranch cookout food. It was so much fun for me to see then having an amazing adventure. Our guide Frederico was so patient and kind, showed us all sorts of interesting areas and fun facts. I would recommend light long sleeves and long pants. We bought cowboy hats in town sort of for fun but they ended up being crucial for sun protection on a full day at the ranch. I will always remember my son kicking his horse and trying yelling, “Yee haw’”. Highly recommend this tour, especially with little kids.

My family had a great time on our half-day hike in Coyote Canyon! The terrain was interesting and diverse—and more challenging than expected, which we enjoyed! Our guide, June, was terrific, as were the brother and sister duo (Araceli and her hilarious brother who both guided and entertained us! Unfortunately, I never quite caught his name!) Lunch afterward was lovely as well...one of our daughters said it was the best meal she had all week! We highly recommend this tour...don't hesitate to book!

One of the best hikes I have ever done. The View Amazing. My best friend and I we always go hiking so we consider this one to have been the best ,because The trail is in between the mountains you can enjoy the nature the smell the greenery as you’re climbing up to the top

Hiking in the canyon was an exceptional experience from start to the delicious lunch finish. Great way to experience the beautiful surroundings of SMA by way of a solidly challenging hike.

Our guide, Veronica, was amazing in every way! We enjoyed the hike, the views, the food, and the people. We highly recommend this tour!
