Southern Italy: Private Pompeii, Amalfi & Positano Day Trip

3. Southern Italy: Private Pompeii, Amalfi & Positano Day Trip

Pompeii is a town located in the plains at the eastern slope of Vesuvius, to the right of the lower reaches of the river Sarno. One of the largest archaeological areas in the world and Unesco World Heritage Site, it is a popular tourist destination, also thanks to the presence of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary. At the archaeological site, you'll find that the ancient Roman city buried by the sudden eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD has been brought back to light. The rain of ash and lava and the resulting thick layer of dust have crystallized, preserving Pompeii for centuries. Brought to the surface, Pompeii is the most visited archaeological site in the world. Afterwards, you'll visit Amalfi, an internationally renowned tourist destination and famous for its incomparable beauty and mild climate. The town on the southern coast of the Sorrento Peninsula, known as the Amalfi Coast, is enclosed by the foothills of the mountains of Lattari. White houses and narrow streets, many of them with steps, characterize the village, a typical example of Mediterranean architecture. It is an archiepiscopal seat. The cathedral, dedicated to St. Andrew, is the most impressive building in Amalfi: a rare beauty, built in the 9th-century and refurbished in 1203 after the Arab-Norman style, and restored several times after, has solemn steps to the side of which rises the bell tower (12th to 13th-century), which preserves intact the polychromy, typical of the Romanesque architecture of the area. The valley, for its wildlife and environmental characteristics, is now a nature-oriented reserve, declared a World Heritage Site, and will enchant on pleasant walks. At the center of the Amalfi Coast, Positano is located on the slopes of the mountains Comune and Sant'Angelo a Tre Pizzi. Thanks to the mild climate and the beauty of the landscape, Positano has been a resort since the Roman Empire, as attested by the discovery of a villa and more recent discoveries, dating back to 2004. From the village, the many typical 'scalinate' steps come down to the beaches, the Spiaggia Grande and the Fornillo, both within walking distance; others are La Porta, Arienzo and San Pietro Laurito, all reachable mainly by the sea. The town, with typical spherical shell houses, is a unique urban and architectural complex, with long steps, narrow alleys and watchtowers along the coastal ridge.

What people are saying about Gulf of Naples

Wonderful way to commence a holiday!

I was due to start a package tour and arrived one day earlier than the rest of the group. I booked this tour to Capri on the app prior to my arrival, as this was not an option that was offered with my other tour provider. The day was quite memorable as Sandro, the tour guide gave the group sufficient time to wander around both Anacapri and Capri. Later the boat ride around the island was amazing as we sailed upon the beautiful turquoise & green water whilst being amazed by the geographical features. This was also aided by a glorious, clear blue sky!

We booked this boat tour as the pinnacle of our family holiday. We were so much looking forward to seeing the sights of Capri and Positano. Our boat captain, Salvatore, exceeded our expectations. It was an exciting and excellent time at sea. Salvatore was prompt, courteous, and very knowledgeable along the entire trip offering stories and showing historic sites. We were very impressed with the experience. Absolutely worth it!

Amazing relaxed day cruising

The captain arrived on time and was really good. He was truly thoughtful and considerate to ensure we enjoyed the best day possible. Two of our party are vegan and the company ensured the snacks on board were suitable for us. We will be using them again next year when we return to Sorrento

We were free to choose the route. Our captain was very accommodating and we received free drinks and chips as well as bath towels. Since it was a birthday present for my husband, we also received a free upgrade. The boat was beautiful. We will book that again.

Great driver, very courteous, very knowledgeable of the entire areas visited
