5 must-sees on any Hamburg walking tour

Hamburg is one of Germany's most engrossing cities, offering something for everyone. Whichever walking tour you book, be sure to catch these highlights!

  • Rathaus

    1. Rathaus

Hamburg's City Hall is a masterpiece of neo-Renaissance architecture. If you don't have time to check out the inside, be sure to glimpse the glorious Hygieia fountain in its vast courtyard.

  • Historic churches

    2. Historic churches

Hamburg's old churches have certainly suffered, you can still see the restored St. Michael's and ruins of St. Nicholas'. The latter was briefly the world's tallest building!

  • Elbe Philharmonic Hall

    3. Elbe Philharmonic Hall

The Elbphilharmonie isn't scheduled to be finished until 2017, but it's already taking shape as one of the city's most striking modern monuments.

  • Speicherstadt

    4. Speicherstadt

With its buildings raised on stilts, Hamburg's warehouse district is a sight in itself. You'll also find unique attractions like its famous coffee roastery and the Spice Museum.

  • Reeperbahn

    5. Reeperbahn

Hamburg's red-light district is the world's largest, but there are also historic buildings and music venues amid all the debauchery. Still, don't bring the kids!

Planning Your Visit

  • How do the free tours work?

Free walking tours are perfect for those visiting on shoestring budgets or simply unsure how much to pay in advance. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there is a catch! Remember your guide does this for a living so bring some cash and pay what you think it was worth at the end. If you don't, make sure you can handle the guilt-trip!

  • How hard is it?

Hamburg walking tours can last up to five hours, but most are in the region of two to three hours. If that still seems like hard-going, why not choose a shorter, more specialized tour, perhaps around a certain district of your choice, or around themed landmarks - how about the venues where The Beatles played?

Our family (4 people) really enjoyed the guided tour with Melanie. According to the guide, the tour could only be adapted due to the corona. The information on the individual stages was very helpful and informative. The individual stations that we headed to from 5 a.m. were the Reeperbahn including the Kiez bakery, the old Elbe tunnel, landing bridges, a short port trip and, at the end, the fish market. The coffee and the Franzbrötchen at the beginning of the tour were worth their weight in gold.

We had a great tour with Sandra (greetings to Sandra's mom). Sandra grew up on the Reeperbahn and, with her own stories, made the tour even more exciting and authentic. The exciting crime stories really captivated us in the end.

A very entertaining and educational tour of the Reeperbahn. Really loved how our guide Frankie managed to find a great balance of delivering the content of the tour with both humor and sensitivity. Absolutely recommend this tour!

Christoph was an absolutely funny guide who made the two and a half hours wonderfully humorous and informative! 100% recommendation !!!

Die Tour war sehr interessant. Ein großes Lob an Matze, der die Tour individuell mit seinen Geschichten gestaltet hat.
