From Marrakesh: 3‐Day Trek to Mount Toubkal

2. From Marrakesh: 3‐Day Trek to Mount Toubkal

On the first day, you will depart from Marrakesh around 9:00 AM in private transport. The journey takes about 1 and a half hours and passes south through the Moulay Brahim Gorges to Imlil. Imlil is a village set in the upper level foothills of the Western High Atlas mountains, a main trail-head with streams and paths branching out in all directions. Here, enjoy a welcome glass of mint tea in the village and meet your local guide prior to setting out for a four kilometre excursion. The purpose of the first day is to acclimatize to the high altitude of the region. Travel south to the Berber village of Aroumd (Aremd), passing the hamlets of Ait Souka, Targa, and Imoula, situated along the slopes. Gaze upwards at the jagged Western High Atlas peaks of the Toubkal Massif along the way. Once in Aroumd, watch over the ancient irrigated terraced fields of barley, corn and vegetables surrounded by almond and walnut trees. Travel onwards to lunch which will be served by a Berber family in the village of Ait Souka, where you will stay in a guest house for the night.  On the second day continue eastwards, crossing the flood plains as the route winds along mule tracks up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. Crossing the river you will arrive at Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims. From here the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline to the Toukbal Refuge (3206m), which is the stop for the second night. The second day comprises of about five hours of trekking. On the third and final day, rise early for the climb up Mount Toubkal. This is a fairly long day with 8-9 hours of trekking, involving 900m up then almost 2,500m back down to Imlil. At the summit of Mount Toubkal, catch wonderful views over the Atlas mountain range and the Sahara Desert. Then, make the long journey back down past the refuge and the well-worn path back to Imlil. Then be picked up by private transport to be taken back to Marrakesh, arriving back at approximately 5:00 PM.

What people are saying about Imlil

What a fabulous 2day trekking! Sunny yet nice cool-breeze weather, beautiful view, and great exercise. Most importantly, this experience won't be possible without Marwan(who keep us safe) and Hussain(who feed us well). Marwan is friendly, welcoming, funny, protective, and engaging. Always checking up on us, making sure we are safe, and happy. Many life stories were exchanged and shared, learnt some basic dance moves, laughed a lot, ate walnut from the tree for energy booster...making the daily 6hr trekking fly by quickly. It felt we found new brother (from different mother). Lol.  Rest assured, you are on the safe hands if he is with you. All the best to you,Marwan and Hussain. Note: Bring rain coat for your trekking gear. We were lucky that the weather was nice since we weren't prepared. But may not be lucky if rain happens on your trekking day. Cheers!

Had a great experience with this 2 day atlas mountain trek! Our guide Abdul was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and we so appreciated having him with us for our trek. The transportation to and from Marrakech was seamless and before we went out Abdul thoroughly reviewed our route and details of the trek. The trek itself was very scenic and provided gorgeous views of Imlil valley as well as travel through several Berber villages. The accommodations were clean and comfortable and the food throughout the hike cooked by Syed was delicious! A great experience and a highlight of our time in Morocco.

I had a completely well organized trip from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains and back. It really was a great time. I was lucky and was all alone. My tour guide Omar was very caring, always made sure I was fine and able to laugh with me. The tour itself is really doable. Very authentic accommodation in the mountains and the food is very simple but lovingly prepared. I will definitely be there again on my next trip to Morocco, but then for a longer tour. Many thanks for everything!

We got along very well with the guide Mustapha and Hassan and Omar as cooks. After the 2 days we discussed another tour over 6 days including Toubkal with Mustapha without any problems. Our cook and muleteer Abdul accompanied us there. The tour and our company is highly recommended. Amazing lifetime experience!

we did 2 days of hiking which Lancen Zin managed to make awesome. his good humor and his knowledge of the Berber culture allowed us to have a great time for our vacation.
