Full description

Enjoy the Mevlevi Sema ceremony at the HodjaPasha Culture Center in central Istanbul and witness the miracle of the whirling dances and dervishes. Dating back 800 years, the show represents in thrilling fashion the idea that everything in the universe, from atoms to the solar system, to the blood that circulates in the body, revolves. Sema is a spiritual journey that the soul makes to God as it becomes mature and attains unity. After the journey, it returns to its life and serves humankind again. This thrilling program begins with a classical Turkish music concert, followed by the Sema ceremony, comprised of 7 parts. Watch in wonder as the whirling dervishes and sheikh take their place and praise the Prophet Mohammed. Following the chant, a drum voice is heard and all 7 parts unfold, - the ceremony climaxes when the extraordinary whirling dervishes revolve to represent the birth of humanity. The Sema ends with a Fâtiha for the souls of all prophets, martyrs, and believers, and a prayer for the salvation of the country. Chosen as the best authentic local event in 2010 by the Federation of Tourist Guides in Turkey, this fantastic show takes place in the fantastic HodjaPasha Culture Center, which is a restored 550-year-old Ottoman Turkish bath in Sultanahmet-Sirkeci.

I appreciate that the creators of this event keep it spiritually intact. Although sold as an event for entertainment purposes, the event is very educational and done respectfully. The dervishes and the musicians are all authentic in their spiritual practice. While I loved seeing into the Sufi practices, it's not a good entertainment choice. If that's what is expected, there will be disappointment. The seats are so close you are touching your neighbor on either side. You cannot use your phone and you might get sleepy.

We enjoyed the show. The English translation displayed on the wall and the online purchase was clear and easy. Some persons arrived late and they were admitted in the theatre although the show had started: annoying. A couple arriving late was accepted with a baby in their arms. The father left after a while when the child was babbling: the web site said only children above seven were admitted: please respect what you advertise. The complimentary drink was a plastic cup of water: it felt cheap. The leaflet gives enough information to make us understand the different parts of the show. It would although be nice to have the possibility to have it online when we purchase the tickets to get ready for the experience and have more time for the exhibition. Overall we enjoyed the performances of the musicians and dancers.

I booked on Get Your Guide because the rates were much cheaper in Malaysian currency. The euro is immensely more expensive so I opted for this platform. The purchase was quick, efficient as it was done online and charged correctly. The ticket collection was simple as well which was to show the QR code before the show. We went 45 minutes early just to view the display at the information center. Free drinks (water) was provided. As long as you follow the instructions to respect the customs of the Sema, you're good. I highly recommend this as a cultural experience when visiting Turkey.
