Johannesburg: Private Pilanesberg National Park Safari

4. Johannesburg: Private Pilanesberg National Park Safari

Discover the “Big Five” of South Africa on a full-day safari tour of Pilanesberg National Park, just 2 hours from Johannesburg. Located in the Bonjanala region, adjacent to Sun City, Pilanesberg National Park is a 55,000-hectare game reserve, making it the 4th largest in South Africa. Depart from Johannesburg (or Pretoria) at 06:00 for the journey to the northwest province. Upon arrival at the 1,200-million-year old extinct alkaline volcanic crater (one of only 3 in the world) discover the beauty of Pilanesberg reflected in the Mankwe Dam. The area lies in a transition zone between the Kalahari Sandveld and the Lowveld. Due to this transition zone, an overlap of mammals, birds, and vegetation occurs. For instance, the red-eyed bulbul and black-eyed bulbul, which normally occur in separate areas, overlap. Marvel at the syenite koppies, thickly forested ravines, typical bushveld, rolling grasslands, and lightly wooded areas. Today, the Game Reserve accommodates almost every mammal of southern Africa, including the “Big Five,” so called because they are the 5 most dangerous game animals in Africa. Home to over 360 species of bird, Pilanesberg is also an ornithologist’s delight. Enjoy excellent game viewing opportunities in a malaria free climate. Plans are under way to create a heritage park that will link Pilanesberg and Madikwe to form another super-large “Big Five” game and nature park.  Lunch will be enjoyed at the famous Bakubung Lodge. Depart Pilanesberg at approximately 16:00 for the return transfer to your accommodation in Johannesburg or Pretoria.

From Jo'burg: Lion Park & Cradle of Humankind with Lunch

9. From Jo'burg: Lion Park & Cradle of Humankind with Lunch

Visit the world-renowned Cradle of Mankind on a popular full-day tour from Johannesburg. Transfers from your accommodation in Johannesburg or Pretoria are provided. The Cradle of Humankind is about 47,000 hectares in size and is located just 50 kilometers from Johannesburg. It is one of 8 places in South Africa listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1999. You’ll find a complex of limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves, where the 2.3-million-year-old fossil Australopithecus africanus (nicknamed Mrs. Ples) was unearthed in 1947. In fact, more than a third of all hominid fossils ever found have come from this area. At the Maropeng Visitor Center you’ll take in the world-class exhibition, opened in 2005, that focuses on the development of humans and hominins over the last few million years. At the entrance, you’ll see a massive burial mound called the Tumulus, which is also your gateway to learning the secrets of human ancestry. At the Sterkfontein Caves you’ll see evidence of the discovery of many hominid and other animal fossils, dating back more than 4 million years, to the birth of humanity. The Lion Park, which you’ll also visit on this tour, is a prime example of the grassland biome typical of the highveld.

I had some doubts before the tour, but as soon as I got into the open 4x4, it turned out to be amazing. I saw over 15 animals I think. The ones I remember are rhino, baboon, giraffe, tortoise, elephant, red hartebeest, steenbock, impala, black wildebeest, kudu and zebra. It wasn't just about seeing them but listening to the stories about these wild life. Everything was well-organised and I enjoyed a lot. Thanks.

Great day. The day before, contact from driver Jason to finalize the pick-up time. Pick up then 100% on time, a lot about the country and things on the way from Johannesbur to Pilanesberg. On the safari then a lot of animals z. T. seen very close. 100% recommend.

Safari experience is one of the most moments I’ve enjoyed in life. Amazing, incredible to have wild life in front of us. Lifetime to remember for ever.
