Full description
After a pick-up at your hotel in Kalabaka or Kastraki you’ll travel a few miles northwest from Kalabaka, to Meteora. The impressive rocks of Meteora rise from the plains of Thessaly, and are one of the most amazing sites in Greece. Many centuries ago, on these gigantic rocks reaching heights of close to 2,000 feet, one of the most important monastic communities of Greece was formed. During this 4-hour tour you’ll experience spectacular landscapes and marvel at the Byzantine monasteries perched atop the steep rocks. Today only 6 monasteries are still active, operated by a small number of monks and nuns who reside in Meteora. You’ll be able to see all 6 monasteries and have the chance to visit inside 3 of them and admire their priceless artifacts. There will be numerous photo stops along the way, so you'll be able to record your memories. Enjoy short walks during the excursion as well.

Four hours for this excursion is not, in my opinion, enough, especially for people over 70 years old, five hours would be more appropriate in my opinion9. Indeed, for younger people, it may be enough to climb all these stairs, which are very passable, but for our elders, once at the top, at the door of the monastery, their old legs and their hearts do not allow you to visit the monastery in the allotted time and you have to go down quickly... That said, the site itself is fantastic and I highly recommend taking this excursion which will remain in our memories.

Good for a first overview, the stay times in the three monasteries are a bit short, since you had to queue at the ticket counter for part of the available time. The pick-up time was 9.25 am instead of between 8.30 am and 9.00 am. A more precise pick-up time would have been desirable, especially since our accommodation was right at the beginning of the panoramic road.

Highly recommend the sunset tour. Includes a stop at St. Steven’s, and a drive by of several other monasteries and one Byzantine church. The sunset view was just amazing, as it had just rained, and the sun setting through the clouds was perfect. We stayed the night, and the next morning, we did another 4 hour tour. This time we saw 3 more monasteries, including the biggest one, the 2nd smaller nunnery and Varlaan. All so stunning!! I can understand why Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They come get you in a nice air-conditioned Mercedes van (so not too many people in your group!) and drop you off back at your hotel or wherever in town. The guides were fun, informative and helpful!! Thank you for an amazing experience!
