Bangkok: Kanchanaburi, River Kwai & Death Railway Tour

1. Bangkok: Kanchanaburi, River Kwai & Death Railway Tour

Make the most of your day of adventure and start early with a smooth pickup from Bangkok. Catch up on sleep in the comfy air-conditioned van on the way to your first stop, the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. Walk along the perfectly kept grounds as you honor the fallen soldiers and prisoners of war and civilians who died while working on the infamous Death Railway (Siam-Burma Railway) under the Japanese Empire. Head to the JEATH Museum, built to commemorate those who lost their lives while working on the railway during World War II. The JEATH War Museum was named after the nationalities of those that worked on the railway: Japanese, English, Australian, American, Thai, and Hollander. Examine exhibits from the war such as weapons, tools, uniforms, medals, and replicas of the living conditions the prisoners of war lived in. Make a quick stop at the Bridge over the River Kwai, where you’ll experience the subject of your earlier history lessons. At Tham Krasae Station, a picturesque railway section that snakes around a cliff, admire the views, see the trains pass by, and fill up on some tasty lunch. Enjoy a quick coffee break before stopping at Wat Tham Suea, otherwise known as the Tiger Cave Temple. Don’t miss the tiger paw prints on its cave walls and the large, gleaming, 18-meter-tall Buddha statue at the top. Make the steep hike and be rewarded with a close-up view of the statue as well as the impressive scenery of the surrounding landscape. After exploring and taking photos at Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple), begin your journey back to Bangkok, with some of Thailand’s unforgettable history engraved in your mind.

A great experience. But we were lucky that because of the pandemic there are fewer tourists than usual. We were picked up at the hotel on time and after a small breakfast we set off with the speedboat towards Phi Phi. There you could snorkel or rent a private boat for a surcharge. We decided on the former and were able to take a lot of great pictures. Even reef sharks. The fish are not fed so that they do not interfere too much with nature. On Phi Phi itself there was a buffet and you could shop. Or swim and relax on Bamboo Island. Really all highly recommended.

I had the most wonderful time on this tour! The tour guides were super helpful and accomodation as I was in the minority being an English speaker. They made sure to inform me where we were going and what we were doing next. On the boat there was an endless supply of drinking water and Pepsi. At one point there was even fruit we could help ourselves to. The buffet style lunch was amazing. There was so much to choose from and the food was really good. I could see that it was all fresh and cooked well.

The staff and the overall organization/ timing was excellent. However, could have done without the last stop and a little more time in town on Phi Phi. A 12 hour day was just too long. Also, a little less pushing on the photo ops and tips…

Auntie Nancy was a really lively and energetic person, able to bring up the atmosphere and giving detailed explanation of the history of the place, will definitely recommend anyone else to join this tour, you will enjoy it!

The tour was well organized, our guide Niranya was very friendly and told us a lot about the country and its people. Unfortunately, the drive is a bit long because of the traffic, but nobody can do anything about it.
