Full description
Enjoy a half-day tour that highlights the important religious and cultural sites in and around Kuala Lumpur. Your tour will begin at 09:00 with a hotel pick-up and drive to the Batu Caves in an air-conditioned vehicle with your driver/guide. The Batu Caves are a popular attraction located in Selangor. The site of a Hindu temple and shrine, the Caves attract thousands of worshippers and tourists, especially during the annual Hindu festival, Thaipusam. There are 3 main caves featuring temples and Hindu shrines. A steep climb up 272 steps rewards with views of the stunning skyline of Kuala Lumpur. Monkeys frolic around the caves, and it is a popular spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. Paintings and representations of Hindu gods can be seen in the Ramayana Cave. Visit the National Mosque, or Masjid Negara in the local language. Built between 1963 and 1965, the idea was to commemorate Malaysia’s independence. The Mosque has a capacity of 15,000 people and is located on 13 acres of green space and beautiful gardens. Its design is bold and modern, and symbolic of the aspirations of the newly independent country. Next you’ll see Thean Hou Temple, one of the oldest and largest temples in South East Asia. Located to the southwest of the city, it is a popular tourist attraction. The 6-tiered Buddhist temple is also known as the Temple of the Goddess of Heaven, who is said to protect fishermen. There is also a shrine to Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Built by KL’s Hainanese community in 1894, it is set on a hill and offers wonderful views of the city. Enjoy a short stop at a Sikh gurdwara before visiting the Brickfield Church and returning to your hotel. Note that the tour includes not only religious sites but also other attractions such as the National Monument, the Old Railway station, Independence Square, and the Petronas Twin towers.

This was a fantastic experience. Batu Caves was stunning, and the monkeys are an absolute delight. Be careful if you have food but, for the most part, they'll come and beg rather than snatching. (Although there are exceptions, especially as you climb the steps). The steps are challenging, so unfortunately it isn't particularly mobility-friendly. We took the tour on a Friday, meaning that the National Mosque was closed except to worshippers, but our friendly and helpful guide made sure that we still got great value for money. We also had the joy of seeing a wedding at the Thean Hou temple. All in all, it was a lovely way to spend 4 hours having a whistle-stop tour of the various religions and how they co-exist in Kuala Lumpur.
