Full description

Discover the historic University of Leipzig and get to know its newest buildings on this guided walking tour at Augustusplatz. Walk to the New Augusteum and Paulinum buildings and tour the interior if no university events are taking place.

As you walk the campus, learn about ideas that went into the planning of the new buildings. See where art treasures can be found and hear about the history and construction of the old church, Paulinerkirche.

Founded on December 2, 1409, by Frederick I, Elector of Saxony, and his brother William II, Margrave of Meissen, the university has since engaged in teaching and research for over 600 years without interruption. Today, 30,000 people study at Leipzig University.

Famous alumni include Leibniz, Goethe, Leopold von Ranke, Friedrich Nietzsche, Robert Schumann, Richard Wagner, Tycho Brahe, Georgius Agricola, Angela Merkel, and the nine Nobel laureates associated with the university.
