Full description

On this full-day excursion you'll start at the city of Peniche, a traditional fishing village, where you'll find a boat waiting to take your group to Berlenga Island. After arriving at the island, you’ll then board a smaller boat in order to see St. John the Baptist Fort. Built in the 17th century, the fort was an important part of the shore defence system. Hear stories about the brave soldiers who defended it during the attack by the Spanish fleet. Take a walk back to the port along the authorized paths of the nature reserve, admiring the amazing views in this UNESCO Biosphere Heritage Site. At the port, you’ll have some free time for lunch (not included), or for a quick swim or snorkeling (equipment provided) at the beach nearby. There is just 1 restaurant on the Island, but it is of good quality and fresh fish is always available. If you bring a snack with you on the trip, you’ll find the island’s only beach just steps away. Snorkeling here is a good option, as undersea life is abundant and the waters are calm. After lunch, you’ll have a chance to kayak around the island if you like. The island cliffs are full of caves, and you can kayak through them. For the less active, there’s the option of touring the caves in a small glass-bottom boat. Afterwards, you’ll head back the mainland for the return trip to Lisbon.

Includes
  • Round-trip minivan transfers from Lisbon
  • Boat ride to and from the island
  • Boat transfer to St. John the Baptist Fort
  • Snorkeling equipment
  • Boat tour of the island’s caves and cliffs
  • Lunch
  • Kayak rental at the island

Overall, I enjoyed the trip. However, my husband and I did get seasick on the way over with the very large waves crossing the ocean to the island. The walk to the fort was more of an uphill hike so anyone with mobility issues should be aware. Our guide, Phillip, was very nice and helped guide an older woman with a cane the whole way. Despite, the seasickness and long travel time to get there, the scenery and caves were beautiful.

What an amazing experience in these rocky islands that were sort of left behind by the North Atlantic tectonic plate! Diogo was our guide, and he was absolutely the best. This tour is packed with experiences, including a short hike on the island, entrance to the fortress, and an around-the-island boat tour. My favorite part was swimming, snorkeling, and visiting sea caves that are only accessible by swimming. This was such a great value, and I would do it all over again!

Experience was amazing the tour guide picked me up on time and was very explanatory about the city of Lisbon and the history of Portugal on out way to the boat. Boat ride was little bumpy but very comfortable. The tour guide was very kind to give us sea sick pill as soon as we got in the van to avoid the sea sick for those who have. But it really worth the boat ride to the island with an incredible view of the ocean, plus when you get there the tour in the island is great along with time for you to snorkeling, kayaking and swim. I had an amazing day!
