Full description

Get entrance tickets to Jerónimos monastery, a national monument classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and located near the city of Lisbon. Learn about how King Manuel I commissioned the monastery in 1496 to honor the Infante for his devotion to Our Lady and faith in St. Jerome.

Once inside, marvel at the Manueline or Portuguese Late Gothic architecture. Discover how the monastery of St. Mary of Belém was donated to the monks of the Order of St. Jerome. For this reason, it is commonly known as the Jerónimos Monastery.

In 1833, when the order was dissolved, the monastery was used as a school and orphanage until 1940. In the 19th century, the church became the monument for local heroes and poets such as Luís de Camões and Vasco da Gama.

Come and discover what is not simply a notable work of architecture, but also an important part of Portuguese identity and culture.

pretty impressive structure and space(s). beautiful--and interesting!--stonework, esply on the second floor. (allow enough time really to look at the head of each capital; they're fascinating!) worth leaving time to see the whole of the belem neighborhood, which is Right There--altho the day we were there the rain discouraged our exploring.

Buy the ticket before standing in the long queue outside. The office to buy the ticket is at the other end of the building . There’s also usually a queue on the right of the Monastery queue for the church - entrance is free . Make sure you visit that too.

They say if you buy an online ticket you don't have to go through long lines. That was unfortunately not true for us, still had to stand in line for around 45min. However, the visit was really nice, the Monastery is beautiful and the church is amazing (by the way, there was another line for the church, but at least it moved fast). I would say it's still worth the visit.
