1. From Livorno: Gorgona Island Day Tour with Hike & Ferry Ride
Day tour departing from the port of Livorno, the crossing by scheduled ferry will be approximately one and a half hours long. Arrived on the island our journey will start with a quick visit to the ruins of a Roman villa and to the store of the island. We will then head towards the Frescobaldi vineyards where prisoners work in the production of the renowned "Gorgona" wine. Through comfortable dirt roads we will arrive at Torre Vecchia, a scenic Pisan fortress overlooking the Mediterranean, and then proceed to the old "Semaforo" now in disuse. The whole territory is protected and divided into areas of different levels. With the exception of the docking corridor - managed by the management of the local prison - access, navigation, stopping, anchoring, fishing and diving are forbidden. The coast of Gorgona is characterized by numerous bays, including the beautiful Cala Scirocco, where opens the Grotta del Bove Marino, once the shelter of the monk seals and nevertheless the Cala Maestra and Cala Martina. In the island, we are faced with two fortifications: Torre Vecchia and Torre Nuova, which are located along the eastern part of the island. Curiosity: about 70 inmates take care of the gardens and the vineyard, looking after the animals and producing wine, cheese and honey. Even today, in the ancient village, which frames the marina, live about sixty residents, but only a few actually live on the island permanently. Visits to the island are regulated and limited to a small number of people, hence the need for a reservation with much notice.
