Full description
Meet your guide at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. Dedicated to Spanish art, highlights of the museum include super collections of Spain's three greatest 20th-century artists - Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Joan Miró. Get a close look at Picasso's "Guernica" mural-sized oil painting, regarded by many as one of the most powerful anti-war works of art in history. Learn about 20th-century art movements, such as abstract art, cubism, surrealism, and modernism, and admire important works by principal artists in a beautiful museum that was formerly an elegant hospital building. Take a look at the vaulted hallways, and enjoy a walk in the gardens to admire the building from the outside. Explore the hallways and galleries of the museum with your guide, and learn how and why the talented artists on display created their art. Once the guided visit is over, you can stay inside the museum, where you are free to continue exploring it independently. Along with stunning works from Spain, the museum puts on temporary exhibitions by international artists in its many galleries, making it one of the world's largest museums for modern and contemporary art.

Very interesting explanations that led me to enjoy cubism and surrealism quite a bit more than I used to. The guide also did a great job of putting art works in their historical context, and also offered alternative interpretations aside from the ones she was presenting as her own. I am amazed at how well she handled a bilingual group and alternated between Spanish and English, and didn't feel that we got less information than I would have expected in a monolingual group (she did speak fast and with enthusiasm, and the tour was a bit longer than expected, which are all good things). When I saw that I was in the English-speaking minority I had worried that we would get hurried comments, but this was not the case, and when she was speaking Spanish I took those opportunities to look at other paintings or review those we saw.

So happy we booked this tour of the Reina Sofia. Paola was such a great tour guide. She helped us understand so many of the abstract pieces and provided information that we would remember and appreciate. She was super sweet and friendly. Made the entire experience 1000 times better.

Initially I was apprehensive about our tour because the group was large and it looked like the tour was going to be given simultaneously in Spanish and English by one tour guide. However, a second guide arrived before we began, and we broke into two smaller groups - one for each language. Our group of five people was the perfect size. It made it easy to follow our guide as we moved through the exhibits. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, leading us through each exhibit in chronological order of the styles of art. She gave us a background on each style, information on each artist and his/her life, and pointed out details and symbolism in each piece. She brought along copies of related works from the Prado and other museums - a very thoughtful extra touch. My husband and I were very pleased with this tour, especially getting to see Guernica in person and exploring the museum at our leisure after the tour. Only complaint: quality of guide’s mic - audio was sometimes painfully crackly.
