Orlando: Kennedy Space Center and Airboat Tour

2. Orlando: Kennedy Space Center and Airboat Tour

Less than one hour from Orlando is NASA’s launch headquarters – the Kennedy Space Center. The visitor site offers a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the space program. Tour NASA’s launch headquarters, and see space shuttle launch pads from a four-story observation deck. Walk beneath a massive Saturn V moon rocket, and relive Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon. Meet a real astronaut, stroll through the Rocket Garden, and enjoy five-story IMAX space films. The center also includes the space shuttle Atlantis, bringing visitors nose-to-nose with the priceless Atlantis spacecraft as only astronauts have seen it before.  More than 60 interactive, touchscreen experiences and high-tech simulators bring to life the people, passion and patriotism behind NASA’s 30-year space shuttle program. Explore the complexity of the engineering marvel that launched the Hubble Space Telescope and built the International Space Station (ISS). Guests can practice docking to the ISS, extract cargo from the payload bay, and create sonic booms and glide to a landing on the re-entry slide. They can also experience the sensation of floating in space, explore a high-fidelity replica of the ISS, experience an orbital sunrise, and take the helm at the shuttle cockpit. On your airboat ride, glide through the grassy marsh of the St. Johns River and Lake Poinsett at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. As the boat slows down to an idle you will have several opportunities to take pictures of local wildlife, such as alligators, eagles, and several species of wading birds by the hundreds. Then visit a natural cypress swamp.

What people are saying about Merritt Island

Our tour was amazing. Both driver and tour guide were so helpful, I would highly recommend adding airboat tour to your day trip as it leaves you sufficient time for the space centre. 10/10! Only negative is drop off took along time due to the many pick up points (over 2 hours) however this is not the fault of the employees. Book, you will not regret it

We had a great time on this tour! The bus was very nice and comfortable and our guide, Oscar was very knowledgeable and gave a great itinerary for us to follow. Our driver was great too, we felt safe the whole time. You definitely need the whole day to see all the exhibits at the Kennedy Space Center. So happy we did this on our trip to Orlando!

Loved the Airboat ride & KSC was amazing……. But coach was 40 minutes late picking up … then the coach was an hour late picking up at Airboats, Though loved space centre felt like we had to rush round… The KSC wasn’t closing till 6pm but we had to leave at 5pm it then took 3 hours to get back because of the number of drop offs

We traveled with our 13-year old grandson and thoroughly enjoyed Kennedy Space Center. It was very moving at different points as it reminded of what we watched on tv in the late 60's through to the current expeditions.

Whether you find space exploration is fascinating, or even if its not really your thing, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is an experience that will leave you in awe and full of inspiration.
