From Malta: Ragusa Ibla, Modica & Scicli Day Trip with Guide

10. From Malta: Ragusa Ibla, Modica & Scicli Day Trip with Guide

RAGUSA IBLA Ibla is a quaint leisurely place, a coffee or a Campari at the Cafe at the foot of the Duomo, one of the finest building in Sicily the work of Rosario Gagliardi, is a nice way to start. A walk down the slightly slopping Piazza and onto the main winding street takes you to the Giardino Ibleo. On the way a short stop to admire yet another of Gagliardi’s work, the small but elegant church of San Giuseppe. The Giardino Ibleo is a haven of peace and quite with an exquisite view of the valley below and beyond. Just outside the entrance to the garden is the gothic Portale San Giorgio, it is all that remains of the original church of San Giorgio, early XIII century, which was demolished in the 1693 earthquake MODICA Modica Bassa is the historic city centre, with the main street Corso Umberto I, lined with baroque churches and monasteries. Little wonder the city is referred to as La Citta’ delle Cento Chiese. Expensive brand shops and fine cafès intermingle with the churches to give an affluent air to the city centre. Modica is now best known for the Cioccolato di Modica or Cioccolata Modicana. The Spanish introduced the recipe which they got from the ancient Aztecs of Mexico. Chocolate shops welcome visitors; the Antica Dolceria Bonajuto is one well known chocolate factory shop. SCICLI It is well worth wandering around this quite little town, overlooked by a massive rock on which sits the unfinished church of San Matteo. Of the many palaces built by aristocratic families the one that stands out most is the Palazzo Benventano, just off the main Piazza, with its façade decorated with Saracen gargoyles. The church of Santa Maria la Nova, one of the many baroque churches in the town centre, houses Scicli’s best known icon, the Byzantine wooden statue of the Virgin Mary wielding a sword and riding a white stallion. The Chiarafura Caves Dwellings, dug out in the cliff in prehistory, saw the last residents leave as late as 1958.

What people are saying about Modica

Alessio is a crack. Attentive, very detailed in the explanations, with a great knowledge of everything we visited and also a nice person who made the trip entertaining and enjoyable. It gives you a lot of useful information, both about the cities you visit and about everything you ask or want to know about Sicily. The same if you want to have a good espresso…he knows where you should go. We were a group of 6 with him and the truth is that we traveled in luxury in the van. If I return to Sicily I will not hesitate to organize my excursions with him. It is a success and I recommend it 100%. Thank you Alessio for a great day.

We were able to book this tour from Taormina. It was an extra long drive, but just outstanding. All three towns are different, but all were not to be missed. If your just thinking about going to Noto, don’t. Ragusa and Monica are wonderful. Allisio was an outstanding guide, knowledgeable and considerate in every way. He added greatly to the tour with his knowledge of the area and its history. Don’t miss this one.

Amazing experience! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, accommodating, and humorous. His expertise made this tour so enjoyable and it was the highlight to our entire vacation. I won’t forget this tour and I’d highly recommend this to anyone looking to diversify their experience in Sicily.

It was a very exciting day and the guide was incredibly good at communicating and making the whole day an experience.

We had a great with Alessio and Natalie. They made made it a very fun day. Loved visiting all three towns.
