Paris: Musée de Montmartre and Gardens Entry Ticket

6. Paris: Musée de Montmartre and Gardens Entry Ticket

Immerse yourself in the history of Montmartre and its rich culture. Skip the ticket line and go directly to the museum which was once a meeting point and house for many artists. Discover the permanent collection and experience the montmate vibe. With your audio guide, learn about the rich history of Montmartre from the 19th century and when it was annexed to the city of Paris. From this moment on, the city imposed itself on the countryside of Montmartre. Artists started to move to Montmartre in 1870 and the cafes and cabarets multiplied in the 1880’s. Montmartre quickly became a place filled with effervescent bohemian spirit and creative energy. The most celebrated cabaret, the Chat Noir, welcomed several performances of the Théâtre d’Ombres, shadow theatre, created in 1866 by Henri Rivière and Henry Somm. Theatre, music, circus and dance all had a role in Montmartre. All of Paris came to listen to Aristide Bruant or Yvette Guilbert recite their texts or attend a performance by La Goulue, La Môme Fromage ou Grille d’Egouts, 3 dancers at the Moulin Rouge. Toulouse-Lautrec was one of the more assiduous artists in representing these performances. This effervescent bohemian spirit was also present in the artists’ studios: 12 Cortot witnessed the passage of several, most of whom lovingly painted their residence.  The museum also offers temporary exhibitions. The duration of the audio tour is 90 minutes but you are welcome to stay and explore the museum at your own pace.

Planning Your Visit

  • Keep an eye on your belongings

Unfortunately, Paris' status as a world-class tourist city means it's also rife with pickpockets. Keep valuables stashed away deep inside a bag - especially on the metro - and don't flash them around at night.

  • Speak the lingo

While nobody's expecting you to master French before you arrive, learning some basic words here and there will get you places and cause locals to look at you favorably!

  • Make reservations

If you're keen to dine at a certain restaurant, reserve in advance to avoid disappointment - and remember that the French tend to eat dinner a bit later than Americans, around 7:00PM.

  • Skip the ticket lines

You don't want to spend your vacation standing around, do you? If you have your sights set on one or two major museums, buy your tickets in advance to skip the ticket lines.

Good to know

  • When should I visit?
Open hours vary by attraction, so check online when you've decided what you need to see.

Our tour guide was very enthusiastic and motivated. She told many historical incidents from artists and various well-known people and how they related to the various cafes and houses. The most exciting thing for us was her spiritual, theological demonstration of the symbols and images in the Sacre Coeur.

Great tour. Even in the cold, walking around Montmarte in a small group, being led so passionately by Emmanuel was good fun! Learnt a lot about the place, and was exceptionally thankful for the cafe / bar recommendations :)

Our guide was simply amazing! He took us to all the main attraction spots and was obviously knowledgeable about Montmartre’s history. I truly enjoyed the tour and would gladly recommend it.

Fantastic tour and Our guide Julian was so much fun!!!
