St. Petersburg: Hermitage Museum Self-Guided Tour & Tickets
- Skip the line
- Duration: 2 hours
- Optional audio guide
The Hermitage is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world. Its collection is an unparalleled showcase of Russian culture and history as well as the country’s commitment to global art collecting. Don’t get lost figuring out what to see!
This room is one of the few in original 18th-century style. The Duchess of Sutherland wrote, “I have never in my life seen so brilliant a sight,” and, frankly, neither have we.
The Hermitage’s claim to fame is the greatest global collection of Scythian gold. You’ll barely be able to pay attention to the guide when you see these Ancient Greek treasures.
Who knew that Faberge made more than Easter eggs? Find an extensive collection as well as precious historic gems that were gifts to the Russian court.
Discover the history of Russia’s militia housed in the stunning neoclassical General Staffing Building.
The Hermitage’s collection of Eastern ancient and modern art is impressive, but its Western collection really shines—see works by Renoir, Monet, Van Gough, Degas and Picasso.
Both the Gold Room and the Diamond Room are only available with a tour. Purchasing tickets when you buy your day pass at the entrance in the Winter Palace is an option—if any tickets are still available. Unlike the entrance tickets, these ones aren’t sold online. Arrive first thing in the morning or call a number listed on the website as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, you cannot exit and reenter the building. With so much to see, plan for a meal before arriving and light fare or a pastry at the Hermitage café.

I would highly recommend using Get a Guide when visiting the Hermitage museum, particularly now with the covid protocols in place & numbers of tourists being allowed access into the Hermitage controlled & the routes to choose from. Our guide Tim was very knowledgable & an expert in his field. Before starting out tour he gave us some interesting background & history of the Winter Palace, Alexander Column & the General Staff Building. During our tour of the Hermitage Tim’s talked us through each room, highlighting important details & pointing interesting things to see, which if we were not on a guided tour would be missed, for example how the ceilings & inlaid floors mirror each other in the Throne Room. His art knowledge is vey good & he shared insights into the artists techniques, styles & what to look for in the paintings, which was very interesting.
A truly fantastic tour for history and art lovers. One can enjoy lavishly decorated staircase and rooms, precious artefacts and get immersed into a great period of Russian history while walking along the rooms with portraits. Our knowledgeable guide Lida offered us a detailed explanation both for the facts and objects including but for literally any question we posed.
Tim, our guide was extremely knowledgeable and helpful with all our questions. His english was excellent and the visit of Hermitage was very exciting. We took one at 3pm and due to covid there weren’t many people there. It took us almost 3 hours but with Tim’s guide it was great.
My gude Oxana was brilliant. She explained the symbols in the paintings and unusual stories and made the whole tour very enjoyable and memorable.
Olga is the best guide ever. Kompetent, funny storyteller and totally outstanding. Hope to meet you again
