Dorgali: Trek to Gorropu with Panoramic Views

2. Dorgali: Trek to Gorropu with Panoramic Views

Meet your guide in Orosei or Dorgali before starting the adventure with some off-road driving to descend into the valley where the trek path begins. The hike starts with some water wading through the Flumineddu river to enter the woodland area formed of Old Oaks, Arbutus and Mediterranean shrubs. Walk along the cliffs of Monte Oddeu and arrive at the entrance to the Gorroppu gorge in less than 2 hours. Admire the incredible rocky walls which rise for more than 400 meters over the dry river bed, making this gorge one of the deepest canyons in Europe. Today the canyon is a natural border between the Italian territories of Urzulei and Orgosolo. The canyon was formed when the Flumineddu river excavated the Jurassic limestone that formed when Sardinia was covered by the sea. Learn from your guide how the marine rocks are full of fossils from ammonites, fish and algae found in the area, and hopefully catch a glimpse of such an artifact. During the trek, discover the unique micro climate of the canyon that allowed the giant growth of the trees including the Phyllirea and the Old Yew. As you continue on the hike, the path becomes harder and harder, you may have to use your hands to proceed through the boulders. When it is no longer possible to go further, it’s time to head back.

We had an amazing experience with Simone! We went in the summer and were a little concerned with the heat, and while it was a bit hot this time of year, Simone made it very comfortable by stopping in shaded areas and giving us some history of the area and information about the flora and fauna. Super interesting! The rocks down in the canyon are slick in some areas, so if you need that extra ankle support, a good hiking shoe/boot is recommended. The trail was about 5 miles long, and up and down, although mainly uphill on the way in and downhill coming back. You go into the canyon as far as you can before the boulders get so big you can’t go any further without some rope. There is a stream down in the canyon which is great after an hour or two of hiking. Pack a lunch to eat at the bottom and plenty (2 liters) of water. The road down to the trailhead is REALLY bumpy and even with the 4x4, we bounced around quite a bit! However, this made the experience even more fun, in my opinion.

It was super nice! Even though we were a mixed group, the guild made sure she spoke in both German and English, such that everybody was able to enjoy the experience and understand the explanations about various objects from the road. We even went to the Sorgenti su Gologone afterwards, which wasn't part of the trip, but the guid went out of her way to take us there to enjoy some nice spring water

Fantastic experience that allowed us to get to know Sardinia even more outside the beach. The guide proved to be very competent. After picking us up in the village, we left in his jeep, we started the trek to the slopes of the mountain, reached and visited the archaeological site of Tiscali and then we started the descent. Come prepared: hiking shoes and adventurous attitude!

The experience was truly excellent, with the guides being thoughtful to reorganise this trip when some unpredictable circumstances occurred. Both the way up and down were truly beautiful and not that hard to do. the visit to the archaeological site was insightful and I did appreciate our guide pointing out mountains, canyons and plants that we would find along the way.

We did this excursion in the summer and despite the heat the accuracy of our guide to take us for most of the route in shady areas made the difference. Melina was a careful and precise guide. Tiscali is an enchanted place that I recommend everyone to visit once in a lifetime ...
