Toronto: Canadian Food Discovery at the St Lawrence Market

1. Toronto: Canadian Food Discovery at the St Lawrence Market

Discover the local cuisine of Toronto with a visit to a famous food market and enjoy the most delectable local eats with an expert knowledge guide. After a brief introduction to Old Town Toronto (the neighborhood where your tour takes place), your guide will walk you past Berczy Park which features a stunning new fountain. From there, make your way to one of your guide's favorite coffee shops for a brew of your choice, before you visit a small sandwich shop nearby which is reputed to have the best apple cake in the world. From there, head to St. Lawrence Market, which National Geographic once declared the “best food market in the world”. At the market, you’ll learn about the origin of Toronto’s official signature food: the peameal bacon sandwich. Celebrity chefs from Emeril to Anthony Bourdain have bitten into one of these, and now it’s your turn. Time will be spent inside St. Lawrence Market visiting vendors and sampling foods that have played an important role in the cultures of immigrants who settled there over the past two centuries. Learn about foods that have become common in this region, including how some of the favorites are virtually unknown outside of Ontario. Each food stop offers the opportunity to interact with vendors, ask questions, and learn even more from the experts. Foods throughout your tour can include butter tarts, artisanal mustard and pretzel sticks, ginger ale, Montreal-style bagels, cheese curds, pierogis, maple candy, and more. The final stop on the tour will be a local pub that has been around for decades. This spot serves creative versions of the popular French-Canadian dish known as poutine. By the end of the tour, you will not only have a better understanding of what Canadian food is, but also a little bit about what it means to be Canadian.

We had the best time on this tour, we learn lots, drank delicious beer and also had the best tour mates which really topped the whole thing off! our tour guide was the absolute best and really fitted the tour to the group. we will be back in toronto next year and will 1000% be taking this again purely to see our tour guide again. it was honestly like sharing a couple of beers with budies and telling great stories. If you are looking for something to do this is it.

Our tour guide was super social and very knowledgeable about the history of the city. He made sure to cater the tour based on our knowledge and interest in the city instead of just spitting out information just to say it. I would highly recommend this tour! The pub stops were super cool and new to me, even as a local.

Great guide Roydon, very knowledgeable, and friendly. Finished our tour even though we had to sit in a coffee shop for about half an hour due totorrential rain!!

Tim was terrific. He knew so much about the area and the food scene in Toronto. The market was amazing. The whole family had a great time!
